MSI has just issued a formal apology for its underperforming RTX 4070 Ti Super, with a “dodgy” BIOS being the cause for below par benchmarking and review scores.
Nvidia’s latest 1440p/4K RTX 4070 Ti Super has officially launched, and despite anticipation still high around the card, some reviewers are showcasing below average performance. MSI’s RTX 4070 Ti Super is at the centre of the claims, with the brand issuing an official apology for its underwhelming performance.
The Verge were one of the first publications to voice their opinions on the matter, stating in their RTX 4070 Ti Super review: “I had high hopes for the RTX 4070 Ti Super after the RTX 4070 Super impressed me earlier this month.…Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about the RTX 4070 Ti Super.“. They used the tagline “Not very Super” for the review, not only damaging the cards potential sales fate, but also casting doubt in thousands of readers.
MSI were quick to issue a formal apology, however, the damage may already be done – with other cards offering up better performance benchmarks.
MSI apologizes for underperforming MSI VENTUS 3X RTX 4070 Ti Super performance
The official statement was announced on the day of launch, with the brand undergoing a “deep investigation” into the underperforming VENTUS 3X 4070 Ti Super. It’s R&D department apparently discovered that the card wasn’t running to its full potential, concluding that a BIOS update for the card was needed to see its true performance power.
The apology goes on to state that the brand is “unwaveringly committed to ensuring optimal graphics card performance” – which certainly seems to be the case as a BIOS update was issued well before most actually received the GPU.
While the article only mentions the performance handicap of the VENTUS 3X GPU, the brand decided to release BIOS updates for a number of other variants, including:
- GeForce RTX™ 4070 Ti SUPER 16G VENTUS 3X – [BIOS Update]
- GeForce RTX™ 4070 Ti SUPER 16G VENTUS 3X OC – [BIOS Update]
- GeForce RTX™ 4070 Ti SUPER 16G GAMING X SLIM – [BIOS Update]
- GeForce RTX™ 4070 Ti SUPER 16G GAMING X SLIM WHITE – [BIOS Update]
- GeForce RTX™ 4070 Ti SUPER 16G VENTUS 2X OC – [BIOS Update]
- GeForce RTX™ 4070 Ti SUPER 16G VENTUS 2X WHITE OC – [BIOS Update]
We didn’t manage to review any MSI version of the card, however, we were lucky enough to get hands on with the ASUS ROG Strix RTX 4070 Ti OC which, after extensive benchmarking, scored a 4 out of 5 from our GPU expert, Seb.
He concludes his own review by saying “Overall, the RTX 4070 Ti Super brings a great improvement to value in the Ada range. It makes teh 70 model worth a lot more over the original Ti. With the potential for great 4K performnace at great efficiency. However, it still is an expensive level for a 70 class card.” which is not bad all things considered.
