Tips on how to survive the Steam Summer Sale
Call us Moira Brown because we’re going to be providing you with the ultimate Steam Summer Sale Survival Guide, we’re literally writing the book.
There’s a great video on YouTube by CultOfMush that details some of the things we’re going to talk about here.
Without further delay, here are some of the ways you can survive the Steam Summer Sale with a relatively intact wallet.
Don’t buy a game just because it’s discounted
The age-old saying “Don’t buy the first thing you see” also applies here. You might be incredibly excited at the prospect of saving 80% on I Am a Worm 3D, but are you actually going to play it? Does the value of the game equate to the value you are about to spend?
We know too many people that go hard every Steam Sale and end up with a mountain of games gathering dust in their Library, don’t let that be you.
Shop around for even better deals
That’s right you read that correctly, you can shop around for better deals. It may seem like it but Steam doesn’t have the monopoly on Summer Sales.
We like Green Man Gaming for discounted games, it is a code site but we have found it to be very trustworthy and has a massive catalog of discounted games. If you don’t mind forfeiting your Steam refund warranty, Green Man might be the way to go.
There are also other platforms like Epic Games and GOG, never mind, we can’t write that with a straight face.
Use the Steam refund Policy
If you buy a game on Steam that you’re not quite fond of, which happens a lot in a Steam Sale, then don’t be afraid to refund it. That’s what it’s there for.
It seems daunting when presented with all of the refund options, but just note, Steam uses these options for data collection about game refunds, it doesn’t actually affect your chances of getting a refund. But we encourage honesty when choosing your reason for refunding.
Steam says you’re eligible for a refund on all games purchased on Steam with less than 2 hours of playtime, or less than 2 weeks owned.
Check your subscription services before buying a game
You might have your heart set on buying a game on Steam. But before you go ahead and grab 40% off Cow Simulator 2026, check it isn’t on any of the subscription services you subscribe to.
Subscription services include EA Play, Microsoft flight simulator, and Ubisoft Plus. Even if you don’t currently subscribe to any of these services, the game, and many others, might be available for a small subscription fee.
