The Legend of Zelda timeline can be slightly puzzling due to various timelines and the fact that time travel exists. Due to this, the multiple trailers released left many fans curious and puzzled if the TotK game is a prequel. Without divulging too many spoilers, follow this guide that details whether The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a prequel.

Is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom a prequel?

The Legend of Zelda series is a decades-long franchise that has various games and timelines in its series. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the latest installment and is a direct sequel to the popular 2017 Zelda game Breath of the Wild.

For those still on the fence about the Tears of the Kingdom game being a prequel. During Ask the Developer Vol 9, the series producer Eiji Aonuma states, “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.”

What timeline is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

So, what is the Tears of the Kingdom story about? As we mentioned above, there are numerous Zelda timelines. However, there are three major timeline splits. They are The Adult, Child, and Fallen Hero Timeline. About The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, this sequel will take place during the Great Calamity Zelda timeline.

In this era, Ganon, the Breath of the Wild’s main antagonist, brought forth the age of calamity after Princess Zelda’s sealing powers grew weak. During this time, our hero, Link, had been fatally injured and thus requiring him to sleep in the Shrine of Resurrection. Therefore it took one hundred years for Link’s awakening.

In the new Tears of the Kingdom timeline, we can expect to see new weapons and gameplay while the protagonists explore the underground tunnels of the Hyrule Castle. But, of course, when investigating these tunnels, you can expect many things to go wrong. Such as the Demon King Ganondorf’s corpse reawakening and wrecking the Master Sword.

Link, who was hit with pure Malice, is now equipped with a new mechanic arm. Thus Link’s new abilities include using Fuse weapons and items, and fans of the Zelda series can now traverse to the sky islands!
