After Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a lot of question were raised about the future of the company and their many franchises. Now that Microsoft owns a startling amount of franchises and names, we’re drawing ever closer to the gaming industry’s complete monopolization. That being said, there’s one benefit to it… One small benefit. But it could mean that some franchises that were previously console exclusives will see more diversity and implementation on other consoles. Well, that certainly seems to be the plan for Call of Duty, one of the long-standing rulers of the FPS genre.

According to the Microsoft president, Brad Smith, he has said he wants to bring the series to the Switch.

Smith said:

One of the things we’re being very clear about as we move forward with the regulatory review of this acquisition is that great titles like Call of Duty from Activision Blizzard today, will continue to be available on the Sony PlayStation.

We’d like to bring it to Nintendo devices. We’d like to bring the other popular titles that Activision has, and ensure that they continue to be available on PlayStation, [and] that they become available on Nintendo.

Smith mentioned the fact that Minecraft – which Microsoft owns – is available on rival systems proves the company is committed to this stance:

The first acquisition made after Satya Nadella became CEO was of Minecraft. That was back in September 2014. And what we’ve done with that acquisition, I think is a clear indicator of what we hope to do if we acquire Activision Blizzard.

Namely, invest even more in innovation, bring it to more people, bring it to more platforms, make it even more useful and hopefully delightful for the people who use it.

This would be something new for the series, as the last time a Call of Duty game was on any Nintendo system was back in 2013. Since then, the FPS was reserved to Xbox, PlayStation and PC for the most part. Only time will tell if the next Call of Duty games will see a Switch port.
