Mysterious Minimalist Horror Game ‘Mundaun’ Announced

With a minimalist visual presentation and oppressive sepia soaked visuals, this announcement trailer for Mundaun is pretty attention-grabbing. Showcased by Geoff Keighley as part of the nebulous Summer Game Fest lineup of video game marketing events, this is a horror game putting an emphasis on the mystery of the unknown, where the trailer is suggesting a tone more than it’s explaining exactly what the game is about.

We can see the mountainous setting, with everything covered in snow. There’s an off-kilter feeling, as we’re alternating between scenes of intense isolation, then perhaps even more uncomfortable scenes of various different characters and creatures getting up close and personal. The developers describe the game thusly:

“Mundaun is a lovingly hand-penciled horror tale set in a dark, secluded valley of the alps. Explore various areas full of secrets to discover, survive hostile encounters, drive vehicles, fill your inventory, and solve a variety of hand-crafted puzzles.”

Perhaps fans of horror games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Outlast, and Alien Isolation will be drawn into the psychological tension on offer here. To some extent, the visuals remind me of classic ’90s and early ’00s PC visuals, with less of an emphasis on high detail textures and models, and more on just giving a general outline, and letting your mind fill in the gaps.

This unique aesthetic has been created by hand drawing art assets on paper, then digitizing them using high-quality scanning processes. This has resulted in a really striking aesthetic, that feels at the same time natural and also strangely otherworldly. It’s an effective technique put to good use here, that really heightens to the oppressive feeling of horror.

The game won’t be out until Spring next year, but it’s already up on Steam, and they’ve got the reasonably modest system requirements posted already:
