The game follows the iconic Lara Croft as she begins to turn from a hunted survivor to a motivated antihero. She tasks herself with the not insignificant task of putting a stop to the dastardly activities of Trinity, a paramilitary organization run by the villainous Pedro Dominguez. The story takes the player all over the vivid and vibrant environment of Mexico where Lara has to carefully avoid and disassemble deadly traps and battle violent, well-trained mercenaries in pursuit of her goal to both stop Trinity and save the world from an ancient prophecy that threatens to tear civilization to the ground.
The game was developed by Eidos-Montreal to the tune of somewhere between $75-$100m and was designed to accurately portray both eh extensive locations and the ancient Meso-American culture. The game gets a bit fantastical too, with the character known only as ‘Yaaxil’, ancient humanoid protectors of the mystical silver box which has the power to destroy the world as we know it.
