CS2 is here! but it seems as though some players are already having trouble getting the game downloaded. This is following the release of the game today, September 27th. Some players already experiencing issues downloading CS2.
CS2 has finally dropped but some are left unable to download it at all
Some players are experiencing strange Steam errors with CS2, errors like which we have never seen before. When going to update CS:GO to CS2, some are met with the “missing executable” error.
CS2 has only just been released and players are already experiencing errors when trying to download the update.
Note that the dialogue box does indeed reference Counter-Strike 2 specifically, and notes the CS2 executable at the end of the text.
This confirms that CS2 is indeed out, but does not explain why this error is occurring. Maybe it has something to do with CS2 just launching, or maybe the servers are already flooding with players eager to play the game for the first time.
How to fix the CS2 missing executable error
If you’re experiencing this error yourself, don’t panic. There may be a few things you can do to fix this error, try the following:
- Validate CS:GO’s game files: This will make Steam scan the game files for CS:GO, realize there’s an update, and download whatever is needed.
- Uninstall CS:GO and re-download it (CS2): This is pretty self-explanatory, there can’t be something wrong with it if there’s nothing there.
- Restart Steam: It could be an issue with Steam not detecting files properly, although unlikely, a restart isn’t inconvenient to do.
If nothing else works then there could be a server error on Steam’s side blocking the download. If this is the case, then there may be nothing to do but wait for the issue to be resolved. It’s unfortunate, but sometimes those CS2 errors just have to fix themselves.
