With the Steam Summer Sale approaching, it seems appropriate to remind ourselves of the luckiest Steam user on the planet. A man who once managed to snag EVERY single Steam game that was on the platform in 2011, for absolutely nothing. Thus begins the tale of the Steam Winter Sale 2011 – The time that one man won all of Steam.
You read it right, EVERY SINGLE Steam game, at the time, anyway.
Speaking of Sales, we have the scoop on the Steam Summer Sale 2023 that’s rapidly approaching.
What was the Steam Winter Sale 2011?
The Steam Winter Sale was very similar to the kind of sales we have now, there was an event where players could complete challenges for rewards. Not only that, but players could snag massive discounts on their favorite games.
The Promotional material for the Steam Winter Sale 2011 on the Steam website read as follows:
“The Steam Holiday Sale is on now through Sunday, January 1, 2012. In addition to huge savings throughout the store, the 2011 sale features two special promotions that allow you to win like never before.
The Great Gift Pile challenges gamers to complete up to six objectives each day. Completion of each objective grants the chance to win a free game or discount coupons for select games available on Steam. If you don’t win, no worries, you’ll be given a piece of coal. But hold onto that coal!
Why?
Coal is the ticket to enter the Epic Holiday Giveaway. It’s called Epic because the top prize is every game on Steam. The more coal you have, the better your chance of winning.“
And that’s exactly what happened. One lucky winner amassed their coal and ended up winning the entirety of Steam’s Library.
Who won the entire Steam Library in the Steam Winter Sale 2011?
According to this Reddit post made 9 years ago, the person who won the entire Steam library collection was Psychomantis on Steam.
Understandably, the user is now private, what with all of the attention that the post gave them. There’s also the following image floating around online form the image board 4chan, However, it’s the wrong date displayed on the image.
At the time, the total value of all the Steam games won was said to be over $20,000. There was over 2,000 Steam games added to Psychomantis’ account following an email from a Valve employee. We bet this man never complained about getting coal for Christmas ever again.
There will understandably never be a gaveway like this ever again, with the number of games on Steam possibly running into the hundreds of thousands by now.
We struggle to find things to play in a Steam Library amassing 300 games, can you imagine over 2,000? Seems more of a curse than a blessing.
