Right now it may seem as if plenty of gaming GPUs aren’t that appealing, be it not great specs, no real improvements, or bad pricing. However, that doesn’t mean they’re useless to everyone with the AI sector being the main contender for the hardware.

As Tom’s Hardware reports, there have been some AI startups boasting about the new hardware they’ve been receiving. George Hotz, the CEO of Tiny Corp an AI startup uploaded an image of what the company will be adding to its setup. The company has received many boxes of the XFX AMD RX 7900 XTX GPUs all of which likely power the AI large language models.

Why there is a shortage of AI GPUs

As it has been reported previously, the AI sector has been booming with plenty of companies trying to buy up any enterprise GPUs. The likes of A100 and H100 cards are not capable of keeping up with the demand put on them. Creating a shortage of the likes we saw during the pandemic and crypto boom.

These are best suited for processing, focused on calculations that aren’t made for graphics generation, and rather work together to complete all the tasks. With all of these in high demand, companies are starting with gaming GPUs. These obviously can still process the work just not focused on it, which means they are still a good option when there’s nothing else to get going.

If that trend continues with other companies, we could see stock diminish pretty quickly. Although these cards haven’t seen as much uptake as before so it could go either way as there still might be plenty of options for both userbases. Especially if it’s not a good option for using everyday GPUs compared to the top-end stuff ideal for computation.
