With the current-gen GPU pricing being high and not being too great, Hardware Unboxed has shown us what the graphics cards should have been priced at instead. With the value not providing much more than the previous generation we see what it would’ve taken to get us excited.

Getting the best GPU for your needs requires breaking the bank it seems, as even the lower end has gotten even more expensive for what it has to offer. It’s not like the best CPUs where AMD has brought plenty of innovation and value to the table. That’s where Hardware Unboxed has gone over the details and thoughts in their latest video on the subject.

The value of current-gen GPUs

One of the main issues of the current generation of graphics cards is that there isn’t much improvement in value from previous offerings. Instead, the price has mostly increased whilst the performance doesn’t increase greatly. Such as we saw in our RTX 4060 review where the improvements weren’t too great over the previous generation.

Below is one of the comparisons with the 4060 Ti vs 3060 Ti and the expectations and satisfaction. With an expectation for performance gains, the 4060 Ti just doesn’t achieve the same levels. Comparing back to the 1070 the improvement is better but compared to the last generation is not quite the same. That makes it seem like a bad choice to try and upgrade for what’s on offer.

This stretches across the board, even with the best AMD GPUs on offer. Making it a bit harder to sell even with the proposition of what Team Red has to offer in general. Even then the minimum value space between $200-250 is lacking from both manufacturers and that makes it harder to find a budget GPU.

What GPUs should have cost

In that same video, Hardware Unboxed goes over the price that would make the GPUs in line with the satisfaction rate. It gives us a better look at some rather appealing options the latest generation could have been with the improvements they offer but with the lower pricing. They suggest the following changes:

  • RTX 4060: $299 -> $250
  • RX 7600: $269 ->$250
  • RX 7600 XT: $329 ->$290
  • RTX 4060 Ti 8GB: $400 -> $300
  • RX 7700 XT: $450 -> $390
  • RTX 4070: $600 -> $500
  • RX 7900 GRE: $550 -> $500

Overall, there is a range of differences in pricing. It could save you a good amount and make it a bit more worthy upgrade from previous options providing a strong value still to this day. It might be some time before the pricing drops to this, as with the RTX 50 series launch on the way, there might be something a bit more worthwhile there.
