If you’re planning on getting a much faster storage device you might want to hold off for just a little longer. According to Trendforce, the average selling price of NAND flash is going to continue to decrease.
The firm is a market intelligence company and brings its findings of what’s expected in the production of the storage sector. Now OEMs are reportedly trying to reduce the production of NAND flash as it isn’t as in demand as expected. However, with a state of uncertainty, it’s not known how much to scale it back. As such it is likely the market will still be in oversupply and will see price reduction, estimated by 3~8%.
But for those on the lookout for client SSDs, the third quarter of the year will see an even bigger price fall. It is expected an 8~13% drop due to the challenging nature of the oversupply of SSDs. That is the main reason the whole sector expected the drop in pricing.
This is the same case for the other users of NAND flash products, including enterprise, eMMC, UFS, and 3DNAND. Even with increased demand for these, like for enterprise use cases it is still expected to see a 5~10% drop. With UFS (smartphone) seeing an 8~13% continued to drop as well. 3D NAND only is only dropping up to 5% while eMMC is staying mostly the same.
That shows that the SSDs we’re likely to include in our next PC build or upgrade are going to continue to fall. Alongside recent price drops for new GPUs, you can expect to see some great savings and hopefully much more affordable PCs.
