Windows 10 May 2020 Update Causes Issues With Intel’s Optane Memory

You may have run into a couple of issues lately if you’ve updated your system with the Windows 10 May update and run certain types of Intel’s Optane memory. Currently, Intel is working hard with Microsoft towards a fix which should sort the issue out soon.

What Is Optane Memory And Why Is There A Problem?

Intel’s Optane Memory is designed to act as a cache for spinning hard drives. The idea is to provide users with the fast access of an SSD combined with the traditional high capacity of a spinning drive. This is usually achieved by having commonly used data replicated onto the Optane Memory storage for quick access, while less frequently used data is pushed to the hard drive.

However, a recent Windows update has started to throw up some errors on systems with Optane Memory installed. One Twitter user reported that upon upgrading to Windows Build 19041.264, they started to receive an “unable to load DLL ‘iaStorAfsServiceApi.dll’” error. This is further backed up by a report on windowslatest.com that gives some more information on the error and a couple of steps that could help to fix it.

Intel’s Working On A Fix

For now, the May 2020 update is currently only available if a user specifically requests it through Windows Updates. Intel released a statement on Friday that stated: “We are aware of this issue. We are talking with Microsoft right now, and will soon have a response, which will include a site where users can get assistance with this issue.”

We don’t know how long a fix will take to appear, but for those struggling with this issue we hope it won’t be too long. For now, you should probably hold back on this update if you have any type of Optane memory installed, at least until a fix is released.
