With the Meta Quest 3 release date soon here and pre-orders already live, we wanted to do a comparison between Meta Quest 3 vs PSVR 2. These two rival devices are built for different systems, but it’s worth checking out how they match up – just so you know how to compare the two. We did a review of the PSVR 2 back when it released in February 2023, and we can’t wait to get our hands on the Quest 3 too!
In order to compare these two, we’re going to take you through the specs, performance, price, and more in order to gather a fair verdict on which is better. The Meta Quest 3 definitely has the upper hand in terms of how new it is, but it’s worth seeing if the PSVR 2 can keep up.
Meta Quest 3 vs PSVR 2 compatibility
As we mentioned in our intro, the Meta Quest 3 and PSVR 2 are built with different systems in mind.
To put it simply, the PSVR 2 is only currently compatible with the Sony PlayStation 5, whereas the Meta Quest 3 is built with PC in mind. In fact, the PSVR 1 & 2 are currently the only VR headsets which work with the PS5, so official hardware its your only option if you want to experience virtual reality on the console. Also, the PSVR 2 is not a wireless headset, and it has to be plugged in to the PS5 via a USB-C cable.
Though the Meta Quest 3 isn’t currently out, we know that will be compatible with Windows PC, much like the Quest 2. One big plus for the Meta Quest 3 is that it will have a large library of games built-in to the headset, so you don’t need to plug it in to external device, you can simply play wirelessly with the games included. Meta revealed that Quest 3 will include a library of 500+ games on the headset during their introduction trailer.
Even for games not directly on the Quest 3, you can simply hook up your headset to a PC which meets the system requirements. This can also be done via a USB Type-C cable, or wirelessly through Air Link if it follows the same compatibility as the Quest 2, as we expect.
Meta Quest 3 vs PSVR 2 specs
Now moving on to the specs, though a complete list isn’t currently available for the yet-to-release Quest 3. Even so, a lot has already been revealed from the aforementioned Meta trailer, with just a few specifics missing.
Meta Quest 3 | PSVR 2 | |
---|---|---|
CPU / Chipset | Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip – x2 the GPU power of Quest 2 | N/A |
RAM | 8GB DRAM | N/A |
Storage | 128GB, 512GB | N/A |
Optics | LCD, full-color passthrough cameras for Meta Reality AR | OLED display, approx. 110 degrees FOV |
Resolution | 2064 x 2208 per eye | 2000 x 2040 per eye |
Sensors | Integrated insight sensors (no external) | Six-axis motion sensor, IR proximity sensor |
Refresh rate | 90Hz native, 120Hz+ experimental | 90Hz / 120Hz |
Battery life | Up to 2.2 hours on average | Headset wired, controllers last ~4 hours |
Size & Weight | 184 x 160 x 98mm, 515 grams, 40% slimmer than Quest 2 | 212 x 158 x 278mm (W x H x L), approx. 560 grams |
Since PSVR 2 doesn’t play games directly in the headset, it doesn’t require its own storage or processing power to perform demanding tasks like this. It has to be plugged into the PS5, so it acts more like a display than an all-in-one solution you experience with the Meta Quest 3.
The PSVR otherwise does have some impressive specs, such as the OLED display over the LCD in the Meta Quest 3. Unfortunately, we don’t yet know the exact resolution or refresh rate of the Quest 3, but we expect it to either match or exceed what we currently see on the PSVR 2.
The Meta Quest 3 will also provide AR experiences thanks to the addition of the full-color passthrough cameras. These will allow you to see through to the real world and provide some additional augmented reality features, something PlayStation VR lacks. This mix of VR and AR is known as mixed reality.
Meta Quest 3 pre-release vs PSVR 2 performance
Now moving on to performance. Since the Meta Quest 3 can be used standalone, it obviously has the advantage of performing without an external connection. But like we said, the PSVR 2 is a peripheral designed to go with your PS5. With the 2x GPU performance increase from Quest 2 to Quest 3 (as revealed officially in the trailer), we can expect it to perform extremely well standalone, though we doubt it will yet beat the performance of the PSVR 2 hooked up to the PS5. We’ll have to wait until Meta or hands-on reviews reveal more specific performance stats in the near future.
The Meta Quest 3 will always have the advantage of being able to be connected to a high-end gaming PC though, which can safely outperform the PS5. Even though the on-board graphics will be impressive, sourcing power from a more powerful external PC will always give the best performance.
Meta Quest 3 vs PSVR 2 price
Even though the Meta Quest 3 is yet to release, we already know its price tag. The PSVR 2 has been out since early 2023, but the price hasn’t seen any significant drops in that time. Here’s how the prices look.
- Meta Quest 3 price: $499 (128GB) / $649 (512GB)
- PSVR 2 price: $549.99 / £529.99
As you can see, the Meta Quest 3 is definitely a fantastic pick, even coming in below the price of the PSVR 2. Considering the Quest 3 is an all-in-one solution, you’re saving big if you don’t already have a PS5. As the PSVR 2 doesn’t have any competing VR headsets for the PS5, it’s hard to imagine that the price will shift considerably. Contrast that PC-compatible Quest 3, which has plenty of competition to go against.
Meta Quest 3 vs PSVR 2 – which is better?
Picking a best here generally depends on your current situation. If you’re looking for a casual all-in-one device, then of course the Meta Quest 3 is the clear winner. Any avid PS5 player looking to experience VR will see it best on the PSVR 2, so this is a good choice if you already own a PS5 and want great gaming performance.
Overall, the Meta Quest 3 provides better value for money, especially if you already have a great gaming PC (or one more powerful than the PS5) capable of running VR without any hiccups. There’s no doubt that PSVR 2 will only get better as more and more VR titles arrive on the console, but much of the VR gaming space is still focused on the PC platform.
