In the modern era, gaming and microstransactions are a hot topic: and that’s why everyone was, and maybe is, asking: ‘are there microtransactions in Diablo 4’?

Now, not every game is nailed on going to have such things, but given its size, its likely impact on the gaming world this year, and its high profile being, players were holding their breath wondering if Diablo 4 was going to have microtransactions.

Now that we’re deep into the open beta window stage of the game’s release run-up, we now know enough about microtransactions in Diablo 4. And while at first it might be deemed ‘bad news’, learning more about them might just ease any concerns.

Are there microtransactions in Diablo 4?

Taking the issue straight on: yes, there are microtransactions in Diablo 4. Boo, I know, massive boo. It was revealed by Kegan Clark, director of product for Diablo 4, that the game would feature microtransactions, and offer purchases beyond the game itself.

Given how Diablo Immortal went down with it’s microtransaction nonsense, and the cost that would take to fully upgrade a character, fans were rightly concerned for Diablo 4. No one wants a good character to only be the plaything of those who can afford it. And no way could one of Blizzard’s flagships do that again, away from the mobile gaming space, could they?

Well, yes, but also, no. Diablo 4 has microtransactions, yes, but they aren’t actually that bad…

Is Diablo 4 pay to win?

And it’s not that bad, because Diablo 4’s take on microtransactions are not geared toward pay to win. Phew! As with other great big games that have microtransactions (such as Fortnite, for example), Diablo 4’s in-game purchases are only for cosmetic based items which have no direct affect on gameplay.

Away from cosmetics, players are able to purchase the battle pass, though that too will only have non-gameplay affecting items attached to it. Players are also never forced to spend money in-game to so, importantly, players can experience all core and seasonal gameplay features without having to spend anything extra. Nice.
