The Guardian is an NPC in Baldur’s Gate 3 that only appears when you are dreaming. This non-playable character appears thanks to the Mind Flayer Parasites infecting you and your party and they are the reason you survived the ship crash.
Originally, the Guardian was known as the Dreamlover during the early access period. Through your playthrough, you will now meet the Guardian in less of a romantic sense.
This dream visitor will periodically give you information about the parasite and even ask you not to remove it as it is the reason you two are connected. Your Guardian will initially give you information in Druid Grove, offering knowledge about a character named The Absolute.
How to find the Guardian in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Guardian will appear during the player’s dreams and they have used their Ilithid powers and taken a long rest. Afterward, they will receive cutscenes showing them interacting with this mysterious character.
The more you use your Ilithid powers, the more you will meet the Guardian in your dreams. Keep in mind, however, that using these powerful magic abilities can hurt your relationship with your other allies.
Later on in your adventure, you will meet the Guardian in other places. The Guardian will also reach out to you and warn you about different dialogue choices. This may affect your decisions when it comes to initiating combat and can help you avoid traps. However, throughout much of the game, the Guardian will remain a mystery for you to solve.
Overall, the Guardian will end up affecting your gameplay as you try to find out more about the Mindflayer tadpole in your head but it seems to be for the better.
As you progress through the various Acts, you will soon learn the Guardian is a Mind Flayer called The Emperor. Though suspicious, The Emperor seeks to help and prevent the Ilithid powers from taking control over you.

The Guardian doesn’t appear to be a force for good or evil but more of an NPC who wants to give slight aid here and there. The hindrance of the Guardian is that you need to use your Ilithid powers to see them more often which hurts your relationships.
While the Guardian does help save your character throughout the game, there is good reason to be suspicious of them.
