MW2 players love the multiplayer maps they get to play through in Call of Duty. It’s safe to say that maps are one of the most important part of updates, and Activision doesn’t hold back when it comes to planning new additions or changes.

Multiplayer Design Director Geoff Smith spoke with Dexerto on the direction of future multiplayer games. During the interview, Smith implied that the final maps to be updated on Season 3 will be more likely to “lean into” competitive-based play.

MW2 maps in competition and beyond

In a recent interview with Dexerto, Smith spilled some much-anticipated hints on how the team plans to release its seasonal content for the end of MW2 and beyond. Smith told them some interesting things and while nothing was too specific he mentioned that players can look forward to ranked grinders and that CDL fans should be excited to see what is in the future.

“As a fun side note… I’ll probably get in trouble for this, but the last three maps of this year, we’ve kind of leaned into maps I think would play that style really well,” Smith teased when speaking with them, leaning towards the more competitive players of the Call of Duty community.

What these maps entail has still not been released beyond these teasers, they could be classic maps redesigned or all brand new maps to explore. We are already months into Season 3 with the Season 3 Reloaded update which means the next update is already on the horizon. To quote Smith:

“Maybe those maps haven’t been started, but at least we’ve earmarked what they could or should be. There’s always kind of a rough plan. Different things happen, different situations come up, and those plans can change. But we’ve been trying to get better at pre-planning the post-launch stuff.” Smith had more to say on the maps in the interview.

With the current CDL looking to close around June 18 and the final Qualifiers this weekend we can safely assume that these new maps won’t be making their way into this league but does that leave us to hope for another league before their newly teased release for Call of Duty 2023 comes out?
