A brand new feature in Diablo IV is leaving players unimpressed, bored, and above all, angry.

Prior to release, it was announced that Diablo IV would be shaking up the series by introducing mounts into the game. To commemorate this, a Twitch drop was held for players to get their Primal Instinct Mount on launch day. Yet when players got into the saddle, only disappointment awaited them on the road ahead.

Mounts fail to live up to the hype

Players have reported that the riding feature provides janky movement and slow interactions, due to a cool down put on the mounting action. Reddit user u/gnigdodtnuoccanab stated in a post, “This is one of the most annoying aspects of traversing the terrain of D4…What currently happens is you have to dismount, wait a second for the game to register that you’ve dismounted, and then press spacebar to interact. Then, you have to continue to wait the full 10 second cooldown before you can mount up again.”

It isn’t just getting back in the saddle that gives players grief, but actually riding your mount has issues as well. Reddit user u/gnigdodtnuoccanab said in the same post, “It would also be nice to have an ‘always run’ option for the horse. I’m constantly having to remind myself to move my cursor further from my character in order to move at full speed.”

For a new game feature as hyped as the riding mechanic was, it appears half baked. Balance is important for any game that offers a challenging experience, but the implementation of this mechanic seems less to do with ensuring an optimized player experience and may be more to do with errors on the developers’ part.

Besides the movement and remounting, the steeds just existing seem to irk players. Reddit user u/Ghriespomp commented, “I just wish I could mute the damn horse. Every single time I speed up my ears bleed.”

Players in the community who agree with these sentiments have begun speculating as to why the mount feature is so lackluster. Reddit user u/Syntaire said, “It honestly feels like something someone had an idea for early in development that everyone was onboard with, so they put it in the trailer, then they all collectively forgot about it until like a month before release and just shoved something in there.”

Blizzard has not stuck the dismount for their new addition to the Diablo game series. Players can only hope that changes are made in future updates to Diablo IV.
