Diablo IV, Blizzard’s latest release in the hellish Diablo series, has an endless amount of dungeons, mini-dungeons, strongholds, and cellars to explore across Sanctuary. It’s part of the fun to explore as much as you can.

While some cellars will spawn enemies to defeat including glowing purple enemies, or wounded adventurers to help, some will instead spawn a little puzzle to solve. While cellars shouldn’t take too much time, it’s easy to get stuck if you don’t know what you’re doing.

If you need help solving the cellar puzzle in Diablo IV, we’ve got you covered. Here’s how you can solve the cellar puzzle in Diablo IV.

What are cellars in Diablo 4?

Cellars are simply small arenas that are focused on killing as many monsters in a 90 second limit. After completing cellars usually a chest is an incentive when you complete cellars in the game too. These little caves can be found all over Sanctuary, and completing them helps with renown and leveling.

How to solve the cellar puzzle in Diablo 4?

When a cellar puzzle is present, you will see nine stone tiles on the ground in a three-by-three square, and each stone will contain a glowing symbol for one of three elements:

  • Toxic, the green one
  • Electricity, the blue one
  • Fire, the red one

Behind these stones on the ground will be a slab showing you the mysterious symbols again, one of each.

If you step on the symbols you will get hit will an AoE attack with the corresponding element.

Stepping on the symbols in the correct order will be the key to solving the puzzle. If you step on the wrong symbol, the AoE attack will go off, and the entire puzzle will reset itself by exploding. You’ll want to dodge out of the way of that because it can easily kill you if you remain in the circle of attack. Let it cooldown before trying again.

The stone slab will have the order of the elements that you need to follow. Read the slab from left to right to learn the order you need to step on the symbols. For example, if the order on the slab is electricity, fire, then toxic, you’ll need to step on a blue symbol, a red symbol, and then a green one. You only need to step on three, not all the symbols, just make sure to do it in order.

Tips for solving the cellar puzzle in Diablo 4

When you step on the right symbol, you’ll get an audio cue that indicates you’ve done it correctly. Make sure to still evade out of the way of the blast because the symbol will still have an explosion! The only difference is this time, only the one symbol will explode, not the entire board. This is much more survivable.

If you mess up the order at any point, like getting the first symbol correct but then the second one wrong, you will have to start over.

It doesn’t matter what particular symbol you step on, as long as it’s the correct element to match. Once you’ve got all three, the puzzle is complete! Open that nice little treasure chest and receive your loot, which could include gold, weapons, or gear.

Because the cellar puzzle is one of the random events that can happen, there are no specific cellars that contain them, you’ll just have to journey across Sanctuary and find the cellar puzzle event on your own. The cellar puzzle is also not limited to one region, so whether you’re in Fractured Peaks, Kehjistan, Dry Steppes, Hawezar, or Scosglen, a cellar puzzle is able to pop up. They’re great to stop by while on your way to bigger activities like dungeons and strongholds.
