You will come across these strongholds along the main campaign, which you can choose to complete. These strongholds are mostly out in the open, so they aren’t going to be hard to find, and they don’t go away with the start of season 1, so don’t worry.

Strongholds in Diablo 4

Strongholds have tons of loot and rewards, including gear and weapons as you take them out, and are well worth doing during your journey across Sanctuary. You’ll also gain 100 Renown points towards the region once you’ve beaten them.

Each stronghold will have objectives for you to complete while you are attacked by various monsters and enemies ranging from undead corpses and bandits to demons, ending with a boss or bosses to battle, such as Duz’agur the Fallen shaman, High Priestess Hadar, Rashta Reborn, Fionnir the Mad Druid, and Dianthus. Many will also have an Altar of Lilith nearby for you to find.

All strongholds are open to every class, so no matter whether you’re a Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, or Sorcerer you are able to play through the stronghold zones, whether they are a ruined courtyard, cavern, or ritual chamber. Just make sure you have the best armor and your skill points are used wisely before you head in.

It’s important to note that unlike dungeons and Nightmare Dungeons, strongholds can only be played once. You can’t reset them, so the loot you get from them you can also only get once.

Many strongholds will also unlock a teleport when you complete them, which will allow you to fast travel back to the area using the waypoints. Many of them are also required to complete in order to unlock dungeons behind them, like The Onyx Watchtower unlocks the Onyx Hold dungeon upon completion.
