Diablo 4 Season 1 checklist

It may seem tempting to wait around for the new season, but have you made sure you are completely ready before the new season starts? Follow this checklist to be fully prepared for the new season.

  • Download the new patch. The new content is meant to sit and wait for players and then unlock when the time comes.
  • Complete the main campaign. If you have not completed the main game, you will likely not be able to enjoy the Season 1 content, as most of it is locked if you’ve not completed the main game.
  • Make sure you complete any Altars of Lilith that can be done quickly with a high-level character. If you get it once on any character, you’ll never need to get the altar again.
  • Do not delete any characters before the season starts.
    • When the new season starts, you can sign in with different characters and your progress will be recorded. Things like map discoveries and certain achievements will carry onto other characters if you can sign in with every character.
  • Make sure to get everything done before October, because that seems to be the date where Season 1 wraps up.
  • Check out the nerfs for Season 1.

What is coming with Diablo 4 Season 1?

The developer livestream featuring general manager Rod Fergusson was very informative about what to expect. Season One of Diablo IV, titled The Season of the Malignant, introduces Malignant Monsters, an infection that’s spreading among both humans and monsters in Sanctuary after the defeat of Lilith. A former priest of the Cathedral of Light, Cormond, is trying to stop it, but he’ll need your help in the new questline available.

You’ll be able to collect Malignant Hearts, gem-like items that can be put into gear sockets from fallen foes to build up your character and strengthen them to fight the oncoming darkness that’s plaguing the world. We do not expect to see a new altar of Lilith, but something like a boost to renown or new side quests are likely. Any XP you earn or places you’ve already discovered are subject to being reset, but items like weapon skins and resources are yours to keep.

There will be new unique items, a new boss called Varshan the consumed, a mastery title, scroll of amnesia, and plenty of rewards to get as you explore both familiar parts of Sanctuary like Scosglen, Dry Steppes, Hawezar, Kehjistan, and Fractured Peaks, and new areas and items like Malignant Tunnels and the cage of binding during the seasonal questline. The paragon board is not expected to change but we may see something different. These new mechanics will not stick around in the Eternal Realm once the season is over, so play them while you can.

Blizzard is also releasing a battle pass system, a first for the Diablo games, with both a free tier and a Premium battle pass tier available that unlocks exclusive cosmetics using Smoldering Ashes. These cosmetics will be one of the aspects that stick around in the Eternal Reaalm once the end date comes for the season.

If you bought a battle pass for Season 0, you’ll need to buy the new Accelerated Battle Pass if you want another one. The Accelerated Battle Pass costs 2,800 Platinum – $25 USD – and unlocks 20 tiers of the battle pass, including the On the Warpath emote, Coldiron Armor Set, Warded Mustang Mount, obols, and Coldiron Barding Mount Armor. If you do not buy the accelerated battle pass, you will not get tier skips. The free skill tree does not include ways to bypass the premium track or to access premium tiers. If you’re looking for those kinds of rewards, you’ll need to purchase the accelerated battle pass.

As long as you have the patch downloaded by the time of the start of Season One, you’ll be able to jump into all the new content, from earning the season blessings to acquiring the new weapons and new Malignant powers for the duration of the entire season until the Season 1’s end date.

How to install Diablo 4 Season 1

Diablo IV will automatically update with the patch that installs Season One into your game, patch 1.1.0. However, if the patch didn’t install immediately upon release, you can manually download it by:

  • Opening Battle.net
  • Navigating to Diablo IV
  • Clicking the blue Update button
  • Let the patch download

This will manually update your game of Diablo IV to the latest version, which includes all the new seasonal content for the Season of the Malignant, as well as balances and bug fixes, plus new Legendary Aspects. It won’t be available for play until the start times, but this way it will be ready to go as soon as the countdown is over.

Is there a way to get Diablo 4 Season 1 Early? – Does the New Zealand Trick work?

There is no way to download the Diablo 4 Season 1 update early. The season is locked until it is time for the developers to unlock all of the content so everyone will be getting it at the same time.

There’s not much time left, so it is worth waiting for instead of trying to sneak in early.
