The sequel to the wildly popular, no pun intended, Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is here titled The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. With it is an entire new story to play through, new gameplay with new powers, abilities, and weapons to go with it.

However, in order to gain new ones, both fans and Link will have to say goodbye to familiar favorites from Breath of the Wild. Is Link’s champion powers one of the abilities he loses?

Yes, Link does lose his champion powers at the beginning of the story. Minor spoilers ahead: In the deep depths of Hyrule Castle, the mummified corpse that upheaves the castle into the air drains Link’s vitality, and his abilities are wiped out, along with the Master Sword being broken while Princess Zelda falls and disappears into a large chasm. This includes the champion’s abilities left to him by the fallen champions by defeating the Divine Beasts from Breath of the Wild.

Link ends up losing his arm in the attack from the corrupting gloom, but the ancient Zonai Rauru gives him his arm instead, and this lets Link’s right arm be the new source of abilities.

What powers does Link have in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

With your new Zonai arm, Link has access to a brand new plethora of abilities that function similarly to the Sheikah Slate runes from Breath of the Wild. Link’s new abilities include:

  • Ultrahand, which allows you to grab and fuse items together
  • Recall ability, which allows you to rewind the movement of certain objects
  • Fuse ability, which allows you to fuse any item to your weapon or shield
  • Ascend ability, which allows you to travel upwards directly through platforms and objects

These new abilities are given in the opening area of the game, the Great Sky Island. Once you complete this area, you can travel back down to the land of Hyrule and use them there to explore. There is a large range of capabilities with them, from building rafts, carts and flying machines with Ultrahand to fusing a mushroom to your shield with Fuse.

All these abilities and powers can be found in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom available on Nintendo Switch for $69.99 / £59.99.
