WoW’s latest expansion pack, Dragonflight, is almost here, but does it come with Shadowlands for free?

Most expansion releases typically result in the previous expansions becoming available to people who have a standard subscription.

Does WoW Dragonflight come with Shadowlands?

No, you don’t even need to buy Dragonlands to get your hands on Shadowlands.

So, if you’re a WoW subscriber, you can now access Shadowlands for free. Since the Dragonflight pre-patch recently launched, Shadowlands was added to the subscriber model, as has been done for every other expansion for WoW.

You can check if the update is available for you by checking out your Battle.net launcher. On the page for World of Warcraft, check if the ‘play’ button has been swapped for an ‘update’ one instead.

Once you’ve done that, you can get straight down to enjoying the Shadowland content straight away, which is a great way to prepare yourself for the impending launch of Dragonflight itself.

Why Do Expansions Become Free to Own in WoW?

It might seem strange, but older expansions becoming free to own is a staple of how WoW has done things long before Shadowlands. It started all the way back in 2011 when the first expansion, The Burning Crusade, was made free to own.

Since then, older expansions have regularly been added to the accounts of paying subscribers as newer expansions have arrived to replace them.
