Penalty shootouts, as well as just an ordinary penalty in the course of a soccer game, are stressful for EA Sports FC 24 players. Whether you’re the penalty taker or the keeper, it’s a stressful event. At least for the shooter, it’s a lot easier. The goalkeeper has a nearly impossible task to achieve, but there are ways to do it that will give you a better chance. Here’s how to pull it off.

How can I save penalties in EA Sports FC 24?

If you’re the goalkeeper in a penalty kicks scenario, you are at a disadvantage. Penalties can occur in two ways. First, if the defense commits a foul or handball in the box (handballs aren’t all that prevalent in soccer video games), a penalty is awarded. Second, if a tournament game that requires a winner (i.e. an elimination match) ends after 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time without a winner, the game goes to a penalty shootout.

If you find yourself on the wrong end of those scenarios, you’re in a tough spot. Penalties, generally speaking, are successful about 75% of the time. Those are not good odds for you, but they’re great for your opponent. Keep that in mind when they’re sending finesse shots, power shots, a chip shot, and more at you in those EA FC situations.

When you are defending a penalty, you do not use a button. Instead, it’s all about he joysticks. A simple flick of the left stick to one side will send your keeper diving that direction. There’s no dribbling or skill moves in a penalty, so you can time the flick right and try to block it.

A good strategy is to hold the left stick to one direction and then move the right stick there just before the kicker shoots. This is not a guaranteed block, but it has been known to improve the chances even if the shot is landed with accuracy.

The ultimate factor for saving a penalty is the guessing game. The keeper has to guess where the shot is going, and they have no teammate to help. The RB, LB, CB, and other defenders are gone. If the kicker is angling to the left, he’s likely going to shoot that way. If it’s to the right, it’s likely that way, but it cannot be guaranteed.

Guess correctly, and you’ll make a save. Guess incorrectly, and the ball will wind up in the back of the net. EA Sports FC 24 comes out September 29 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
