Combat is a big part of Final Fantasy 16. Throughout the game, you will control Clive and use many Eikon abilities, perform combos, and dodge enemy attacks. This game is full of fast-paced action.

There is one mechanic that helps in battle and that is stagger. Staggering foes will cause them to fall and give you time to go in and deal some serious damage with your sword.

Since Final Fantasy XVI is a real-time action game, you will see a stagger bar below the enemy health bar. Focus on this will gauge and deplete it using any ability you can. This guide will show you how to stagger foes in Final Fantasy 16.

Final Fantasy 16 – How to stagger enemies

To stagger an enemy in Final Fantasy 16, you will need to deplete the foe’s will gauge. This is the yellow bar positioned under the health bar of the enemy you are facing. Only strong foes like minibosses and bosses have will gauges. Smaller enemies do not.

There are two stages to breaking an enemy’s will. When the gauge drops to the halfway point, the enemy will be slightly stunned. When the bar is fully depleted, the enemy will be staggered.

You can stagger a foe by hitting them with multiple melee attacks and abilities. Make sure to perform precision dodges and counter if possible. Depending on the type of enemy, magic attacks can be a good stagger tool as well.

When an enemy’s bar is halfway broken, use the Deadly Embrace ability to perform a takedown. This will help weaken your foe so you can get some extra attacks in.

Some of the best abilities to use to quickly break an enemy’s will are Garuda’s Gouge, Titan’s Windup, and Phoenix’s Heatwave. Phoenix Shift is another good ability that can help you hit an enemy quickly, especially if you get knocked back.

Clive’s limit break ability is another great tool you have at your disposal. After breaking an enemy’s stagger bar, hit them with as many attacks as possible. Be sure to use the D-Pad buttons to control Torgal and make him attack as well.

If you are in need of healing, go ahead and drink a potion while you have the opportunity. If you can manage to deal enough damage to a staggered foe, you will get a trophy.
