The Final Fantasy series has many entries that feature turn-based combat. Square Enix has favored this type of combat over other styles for many years. Recent entries to the franchise have switched genres from being turn-based RPGs and have instead been more action-focused.

There are many gamers who enjoy the turn-based Final Fantasy games. Since Final Fantasy 16 is the newest game in the series, what combat system does it use? Is Final Fantasy 16 turn-based?

Does Final Fantasy 16 have turn-based combat?

The game’s producer Naoki Yoshida stated in an interview that Final Fantasy 16 does not have turn-based combat. This is enforced by the demo which allows you to play the opening sequence of the game. Instead, Square Enix decided to use a real-time combat system for this entry in the series.

The decision for this change, the producer said, is because they want the game to appeal to younger audiences. There is no denying that many gamers have grown up with more action-based video games where when you hit a trigger, you attack.

Square Enix wants the game to appeal to a larger audience than those who grew up playing turn-based RPGs. Naturally, these games will evolve to suit the preference of the audience.

Being a real-time action game allows Clive Rosfield (the game’s protagonist) to utilize some pretty amazing moves. This change in combat style makes the game feel similar to such games as Devil May Cry.

Previous entries in the Final Fantasy series have slowly evolved to be more action-focused with the change being very apparent in the past decade. Games like Final Fantasy 12 and 13 changed the combat system before Final Fantasy 15 came in with entirely real-time action combat.

Each entry in the series has evolved the combat, making it what it is today. You can try out the combat before purchasing the game by downloading the demo on PlayStation. See for yourself how the real-time combat in Final Fantasy 16 elevates the experience.
