The Legend of Zelda is back with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom released on Nintendo Switch, with its latest release having fans spending hours upon hours exploring and questing. Fighting an army of monsters across the land of Hyrule as the Hylian hero Link is all part of the fun, and Tears of the Kingdom brings back one of the elements of its predecessor Breath of the Wild, with the Blood Moon.

No matter where you are in Hyrule, whether by a campfire in the mountains, This bloody red full moon will rise and Ganon’s power will revive all the fallen monsters across the overworld that you’ve killed in the game world. The effects of the Blood Moon can be annoying if you’ve just finished fighting a bokoblin camp, but it keeps the world from becoming emptier as you travel through it. How can you know when nights of the red moon, courtesy of Ganondorf, will come? Here’s how you do it.

When will a Blood Moon will happen in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

When the Blood Moon rises in the night sky it will be quite obvious. Around midnight time of day on the night of a Blood Moon, the sky will turn blood red and pools of malice, or gloom as it’s now known, will rise up from the ground. The game will look like it’s had a red filter placed on it. Princess Zelda will then take over the screen with the Blood Moon cutscene and tell you about the phenomenon in the spookiest way she can, and tell you the aimless spirits of monsters will rise and the world is threatened once again with its peak. The Calamity’s forces will then rise again.

The frequency of the Blood Moon waxing has a timer of once every seven days in-game time, so don’t worry about it the next night. The real world time is broken down like this:

  • one hour in-game is one minute in real time
  • every 168 minutes, or two hours and 48 minutes, equals 7 in-game days and is the time period when a Blood Moon will occur

That’s how you know! Any slain monster will come back to life with the effects of the Calamity Ganon’s power like they did during the age of calamity, and yes that includes the Gleeok, Hinox or Talus you finally took down that’s been giving you trouble. Mini-bosses and other enemies of past scenarios will revive, but actual bosses like Master Kohga will stay dead. Nothing else changes besides these monster revivals. The hour of the Blood Moon will begin to turn the sky red before midnight though, so in-game watch out for this and avoid the area or make your escapes if you don’t want to fight the same monsters again, or eat an extra dish from your menu to be ready to fight them again. At least there are no guardian stalkers this time around, so no need to watch out for rogue lasers.
