The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a massive game for the Nintendo Switch with a lot of history. Previous titles in the Zelda series covered a massive chunk of the world’s lore. Tears of the Kingdom is looking to continue this lore and branch out even further into the history of Hyrule.

Various hints from the trailers have shown that Tears of the Kingdom may be more than fans thank. There may be certain items and characters that make an appearance from previous titles. So should you get The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom if you never played Zelda?

What should you play before The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

Tears of the Kingdom isn’t the first Zelda game to be a sequel. Majora’s Mask is the sequel to Ocarina of Time. Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel to Breath of the Wild. Due to this, it is best to at least play BotW before diving into the new Zelda game.

Tears of the Kingdom follow the story of Breath of the Wild and starts not long after the events of Breath of the Wild. This epic adventure will require a little backstory before you start playing. After all, the story focuses on the reincarnation of Calamity Ganon from Breath of the Wild. Hopefully, Tears of the Kingdom will have a recap for those who don’t remember the events of the previous game.

There may be additional Zelda games that will be good for players to experience before Tears of the Kingdom. Games like Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are great places to start learning the lore of the world. Skyward Sword specifically teaches players about the goddesses and the spirit within the Master Sword.

Newcomers to the series may feel a bit overwhelmed if they begin with one of the open-world games in the Zelda franchise. While the gameplay will be simple enough to learn and the combat will be easy to master, those who care about the story may feel out of place.

Tears of the Kingdom is doing to change the Legend of Zelda series by introducing new characters and granting Link new abilities that have never been seen before. Players will have access to traits like Fuse, Ascend, and Recall to help them navigate this iteration of Hyrule before finally moving on to defeat Ganondorf.
