You’ll be carrying around plenty of loot in your space adventure for Bethesda’s latest title Starfield, and that includes on your spaceship. Cargo is precious, and it’s important that you have enough room to store it.

Once you’ve figured out how to board your ship, where to find parts to repair your ship with, and more, you’ll want to focus on upgrading the storage. It will let you carry around more items in your cargo hold and take more resources with you.

How do you increase your ship’s storage in Starfield? Look no further, we’re here to show you how to increase your cargo hold in Starfield.

How to increase ship storage in Starfield

In order to increase your ship’s storage, what you need to do is:

  • Go to any Ship Technician at a landing pad
  • Choose to Modify your ship
  • Go to the Ship Builder section in the menu
  • Add either Cockpit Modules or Cargo Modules

This will let you add additional storage to your ship, allowing you to carry more cargo in your inventory.

How much storage can your ship have in Starfield?

The first ship you have in-game, the Frontier, has around 450 units of storage. Each Cockpit Module adds around 250 pounds of cargo space, and each Cargo Module adds anywhere from 210 to 320 storage. These ship parts will make offloading cargo less of a necessity as you continue through the story.

You do need to purchase these modules, and the modules also add extra weight to your ship, so it could make it harder to turn and pilot it. However, the upgrades will still allow you to pilot pretty smoothly, with the additional ship storage space.

Your ship’s storage capacity is just one of the many features on your spaceship that you can modify, and you can increase your skills to allow more freedom with your ship, like the Targeting System Skill and Starship Design Skill.

There’s plenty more to find in Starfield, which you can play on PC and Xbox.

How to store items on your ship in Starfield

If you want to store items on your ship, start by entering your ship. Once inside, open your inventory menu. At the bottom right of the screen, you will see the option to access the ship’s cargo hold. Press the Q key on PC or LB on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. Once you are in the cargo hold menu, press the button again to access your inventory. From there, select items to place in the cargo hold.

The cargo hold of your ship grants you extra storage. You can get even more storage by putting points into the tech tree. If you take the Payloads skill, you will get more storage on your ship. Your ship should also have a captain’s locker to store items in.

Your ship’s inventory is the best place to store contraband and items that you want to keep out of the hands of factions like the Crimson Fleet.
