There is no doubt that there’s a lot of desire to play Starfield on PS5, so a lot of people are wondering whether Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax and Bethesda will stop that. Being loyal to PlayStation used to mean that money went to get their players exclusivity, but it appears like Microsoft gave a lot more to take the big studio outright.

Future releases from Bethesda, like Starfield and Elder Scrolls seem to be rocky, but luckily those of you who own PlayStation consoles will have your answer as to if Starfield will be released on PlayStation 5. Starfield brings a lot of questions with it, like if it will be playable on Xbox One, if it’s coming to Game Pass, or when it will release.

Below – we’ll address exactly why this seems to be the case which has left many PlayStation users frustrated too.

Will Starfield release on PS5?

No. Starfield was confirmed to be an Xbox Series X|S exclusive game in an interview Pete Hines, the Head of Publishing, did with Polygon. Since the game is an Xbox console exclusive, it will not be coming to PS5 at launch. ZeniMax Media is a part of Microsoft now, and it’s easy to see that Microsoft would want to support its own console, the Xbox, over Sony’s PlayStation.

Why is Starfield not coming to PS5?

The reasoning was revealed during the FTC v Microsoft hearing, where Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, stated that Deathloop and Ghostwire were a huge reason for the exclusivity. Sony had paid to give the PlayStation platform timed exclusivity for those games, and there were rumors that Starfield was going to get the same treatment. So the Microsoft corporation decided to buy the parent company of Bethesda Studios to make sure they’ll always be able to offer their bigger games.

A similar thing happened with Microsoft buying Mojang, according to Minecraft The Unlikely Tale of Markus “Notch” Persson and the Game that Changed Everything by Daniel Goldberg. Microsoft was more focused on acquiring Mojan for Minecraft than Scrolls, and it looks like Microsoft wanted to buy ZeniMax Media to own Bethesda Softworks.

Future Bethesda Game Studios titles and titles published under the Bethesda brand could be exclusive for Microsoft as well. Since these studios are now part of the Xbox brand, more exclusive games could be coming in the future.

Unfortunately, Sony won’t be getting its hands on Starfield in the future either since Microsoft has made it fairly clear that it plans on keeping Starfield on the Xbox. While there are many who are hoping the game will be a timed exclusive, there is no indication that that is true.

Starfield has the opportunity to be one of the biggest games of the year. After all, it spans the universe and tells a story about humanity’s greatest mysteries.
