The 40 series GPU refresh has come to fruition, so we decided we should do a RTX 4070 Ti Super vs RTX 3090 Ti comparison to see how these newer Super cards hold up against the flagship of the 30 series. Before you head off to buy the 4070 Ti Super now that the release date is here, it’s always worth considering what the previous generation of graphics cards has to offer.

Interestingly enough, the 30 series didn’t get any Super cards of its own, but these refreshed models aim to bring better performance to the table. We already compared 4070 Ti vs 3090 in the past, so this is a pretty similar scenario – we’ve even compared 4070 Ti Super vs PS5 for console fans. Below, we compare the specs, performance, and price. If you want a deeper dive into the new Super, don’t miss our RTX 4070 Ti Super review.

Despite a generous boost to the clock speeds for the newer GPU, the RTX 3090 Ti outclasses the 4070 Ti Super is pretty much every regard, and understandably so. The flagship of the 30 series has only been surpassed by the likes of the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090, but the 4070 Ti Super is the next closest Nvidia GPU you have in terms of power.

Clocking in safely over 10,000 CUDA cores, the RTX 3090 Ti is a powerhouse. Even though the Super edition of the 4070 Ti boosts the VRAM to 16GB, the 3090 Ti is still well above that with a full 24GB, and only the 4090 can match that. The memory bandwidth and bus size are also much greater, allowing for smoother gaming performance at resolutions like 4K.

All of the high-end specs packed into the 3090 Ti does have a negative effect on the power consumption, as you can see from the high 450W TDP. This card runs much hotter than the 4070 Ti Super, so you’ll have to ensure you have suitable PC case fans to mitigate that.

Ada Lovelace vs Ampere architecture

Another thing to touch on in terms of specs is the architecture. With the 40 series using the newer Ada Lovelace architecture, these GPUs benefit from tech that the 30 series misses out on. Nvidia went big on AI-enhanced performance for the newer cards, helping them boost framerates beyond their raw performance values.

Ampere still gets strong ray tracing performance, upscaling, and Deep Learning anti-aliasing but Ada Lovelace introduced the new Frame Generation technology available on DLSS 3 (and now DLSS 3.5). DLSS 3.5 at least adds Ray Reconstruction to all RTX cards, but Frame Generation is only for the 40 series and helps boost framerates considerably more.

RTX 4070 Ti Super vs RTX 3090 Ti performance

We can look towards benchmarks to get a good understanding of how the RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 3090 Ti compare in terms of performance levels. From looking at the specs alone, you would expect that the 3090 Ti is the clear winner – and it is certainly the case. However, the 4070 Ti Super can make some gains thanks to the newer architecture if you’re making full use of the Frame Generation tech, albeit at the cost of some visual fidelity and added input lag.

Back when we reviewed the RTX 3090 Ti, the performance was unrivalled in all resolutions. It averaged 122FPS at 4K with max settings & raytracing in Resident Evil Village. In Warzone, it managed averages of 124FPS at 4K and 184FPS at 1440p for the liquid-cooling model we tested. Looking at other reviews, TechSpot recorded 12 game averages of 210FPS, 172FPS, and 108FPS for 1080p, 1440p, and 4K respectively.

As for the RTX 4070 Ti Super, the benchmarks fall much further behind, especially once you reach 4K. This card is top-notch for 1440p, but the 4K performance can’t match that of the flagship models, despite the improved level of VRAM. TechPowerUp’s tests revealed averages of 178FPS at 1080p, 138FPS at 1440p, and 81FPS at 4K in terms of raw performance.

Is the RTX 4070 Ti Super cheaper than the 3090 Ti?

There’s a massive discrepancy between the prices of these two cards on launch, but of course the RTX 3090 Ti is a much older card than the Super. Just for reference though, we can say that the MSRPs of these cards are $799 for the 4070 Ti Super and a whopping $1,999 for the 3090 Ti. The flagship Ti edition of the 3090 was certainly only marketed for those that wanted the best of the best.

Pricing for 30 series cards was all over the place given the fluctuating market caused by low stock levels, in part thanks to Crypto mining. The 3090 Ti released during the tail end of the madness, but it is still expensive to this day. We’ve spotted the Founders Edition card on Amazon still going for around $2,000. So, the RTX 4070 Ti Super is way cheaper in comparison. If you really do want to source a 3090 Ti, then going second hand will give you the best value for money, though quality cannot be guaranteed.

Should I buy RTX 4070 Ti Super or RTX 3090 Ti?

If you’re looking for a high-end GPU, then we think that the RTX 4070 Ti Super is the much more sensible choice. Yes, the 3090 Ti does offer better raw performance, but the value for money isn’t the best – especially since you might as well buy the RTX 4090 or 4080 if you want that kind of power these days. The Super refresh does give you more VRAM than the original 4070 Ti, but performance gains aren’t too substantial – it works really well at 1440p and is suitable for 4K, especially if you mess around with DLSS and Frame Gen settings.

RTX 4070 Ti Super vs RTX 3090 Ti FAQs

Is the RTX 4070 Ti Super better than RTX 3090 Ti?

Based on raw specs and performance, the RTX 3090 Ti comes out on top as the clear winner. However, we think that the 4070 Ti Super offers better value for money for the most part.

Is the RTX 3090 Ti still worth it?

In all honesty, the RTX 3090 Ti is hard to recommend given the high price for a new model. You may be able to save big by going second-hand though.

However, we’d still recommend a newer 40 series card these days.
