In the battle of PC versus console, specifically the RTX 4070 vs PS5, is the RTX 4070 more powerful than the PS5? How do they compare in terms of specs and value for money? Read below to find out.
RTX 4070 vs PS5 specs
As you can see below, although the PlayStation isn’t far off the RTX 4070 in terms of clock speed and memory bandwidth, and actually beets it in terms of the amount of VRAM, it lag behinds substantially in terms of the amount of cores/shaders, which will have a detrimental impact on its performance.

RTX 4070 vs PS5 performance: is the RTX 4070 more powerful than the PS5?
In gaming, the PS5 can achieve either a maximum of 60FPS at 4K resolution or a maximum of 120FPS at 1440p when put into Performance Mode. It also supports 8K in some games, but don’t expect these to be particularly demanding. It’ll be achieved via upscaling.
By contrast, the RTX 4070 can achieve around 90FPS at 4K in moderately demanding titles (though not the most demanding AAA titles like CyberPunk 2077, when it will perform at around 45-60FPS), or around 100-160 FPS in most titles on max settings. Playing at 1080p resolution will get you even more FPS. The 4070 is more than capable of running some of the more simple games, such as CSGO, at 8K with DLSS enabled, but is not designed for more-demanding titles at that resolution.
Looking at the technical data, the PS5 offers 10.29 TFLOPS FP32 float performance, as well as a 643.1 GFLOPS FP64 double performance. The RTX 4070 in contrast offers 29 TFLOPs of FP32 and 455.4 GFLOPS of FP64. In theory this makes the card significantly more powerful than Sony’s machine, but that only paints one side of the picture. Game exclusives and developers designing games specifically to push the PS5’s hardware results in games that look stunning and run impeccably. One of the big reasons why the PS5 is able to punch above its weight is its processor – which is based on AMD’s 8-core Zen2 design, running at limited 3.5GHz. To our knowledge this cant be overclocked. For reference, this base clock is slightly less than the Xbox Series X’s 3.8GHz CPU.
RTX 4070 vs PS5 price
The RTX 4070 Founder’s Edition is available for $599/£589, though obviously you need to pay for all the other components in a PC as well (unless you’re just updating the GPU in your existing rig) The PlayStation 5 in contrast can now be bought for $499/£480 for the disc version or $399/£389 for the digital only version. This seems to make the PS5 definitely more of a bargain in terms of bang for your buck. That being said, in time we can expect the 4070 prices to begin to fall – especially when the rumoured 50 Series cards start appearing. If you’re after a 4070, it may be worth waiting a few months.
RTX 4070 vs PS5 – which is best?
A PC equipped with an RTX 4070 graphics card definitely has a higher ceiling for performance than a PlayStation 5 is capable of, and a higher average FPS performance across most games. However there may be some titles, played on certain resolutions in which the performance gap isn’t particularly huge, and the PS5 is not only cheaper (particularly if you go for the discless version), but the full package – assuming you’ve got a high enough refresh rate TV/monitor to link it to.
The other thing to consider is the games. By opting for the PS5 you’ll get access to a ton of Sony exclusives – such as the brilliant God of War: Ragnarok and other incoming titles such as Wolverine. Some of these will eventually make their way to PC, but don’t expect that any time soon. Overall then, it’s hard to pick out a clear winner – both have some advantages over each other depending on what you’re looking for. If you’re after pure hardware, then the 4070 will come out on top, but with a huge selection of exclusives specifically designed to make the most out of the PS5’s older hardware, Sony’s console offers a ton of value.

RTX 4070 vs PS5 FAQs
What is the RTX 4070 equal to?
Roughly speaking, without DLSS enabled, the RTX 4070 performs closest to the RTX 3080 graphics card, although around 2%-5% worse on average, depending on the game and resolution. With DLSS enabled, the more advanced DLSS 3.0 in the RTX 4070 could mean that it outperforms slightly.
What RTX is equivalent to PS5?
The PlayStation 5 is probably closest to the RTX 3070 in terms of raw specs, though it can outperform a PC with the Nvidia car equipped in certain scenarios.
