As the current generation of graphics cards might not be the one for you, looking back at the previous range of cards isn’t always a bad idea. So as one of the more popular choices of the 30 series, we see if the 3080 is still good in 2024 but might not be worth it entirely.

The new Nvidia cards have been a mixed bag in terms of reception. Although the Ada cards have significant performance improvements, new features have also been introduced. This has led to some of the model pricing increasing significantly.

In particular, the RTX 4080 nearly doubles the MSRP of the 80 model. Where the 3080 came out with a price tag of $699, the 40 card asks for $1,199. Let alone any custom models that will ask for a higher price. Which might not be worth the extra amount.

Previously, generational increases hadn’t spiked the price this much. And might be showing the effects of the shortage and inflated prices that some still paid more for them. But that might not cut it for you and so the last gen is a good choice.

3080 vs new gen

With the slow release of the new gen of cards, we have had a wide range of benchmarks to compare. And there we can see that in fact the 3080 does lose out to all the rest. With the like of the 7900 XTX, and even 4070 Ti ahead of the older card. And even that card, a slightly lower model is still a higher MSRP of $799.

But they do all improve the performance over the 3080. But it still has a good price to performance and is a great performer in general. With an above 60 FPS average at 4k and over 100 at 1440p and 1080p, it still is plenty powerful for most users.

And it comes with better availability and pricing than at its peak, even though it’s still just a bit higher. Considering it is an older choice, it does offer plenty of choice. So looking to see if that is plenty of power for you it’s not a bad choice at all. The only potential thing you might be missing out on is the usage of DLSS 3, as the Ada series introduced the frame generation hardware.

Even so, the RTX cards all have access to DLSS 2 at a minimum and still ray tracing. As such you still have plenty of features to take advantage of that can improve your performance or quality as well. But the 4070 Ti might be the better option now instead, and even any newer cards like the 4070 when it comes out could be a good alternative.

FAQs

Is RTX 3080 worth buying now?

If available new and at MSRP, the RTX 3080 is still good value. But being the older generation it lacks the performance increase and new features. And the 4070 Ti with a bit higher MSRP increases the performance significantly enough to be a good choice instead. Especially when newer cards are still coming that will offer increase with better price hjopefully.

Is RTX 3080 still worth it in 2024?

Although it was a great card and still is now, there are some better options available now, the newer generations increase the performance and value of some models. As ones like the 4080 significantly increase the price. But there are some cards that do make sense, as the 4070 Ti even has a better increase for a similar price. So quite simply with newer cheaper cards coming, its probably not worth it.
