AMD just made some big announcements at GDC (Game Developers Conference) 2024, announcing the latest version of their upscaling tech, FSR 3.1. They also revealed that FSR 3 is now going to be available in 40 games. The most important change to us though is that frame generation is being decoupled from upscaling.
FSR is the answer to Nvidia’s DLSS technology, but it has always been playing catch-up, with Intel’s XeSS also an alternative. Frame generation via DLSS 3 has been a big selling point for the latest 40-series Nvidia GPUs, though AMD did retaliate with frame generation for FSR 3. But what if you want to use DLSS mixed with FSR frame gen? Well, you may soon be able to do just that.

FSR 3.1 frame generation works with other upscalers
If you want to use DLSS, you’ll need an Nvidia RTX GPU – and if you want DLSS 3 frame generation, you’ll need 40-series card. However, AMD are less restrictive, even making FSR open-source, so it is available on rival GPUs (and consoles too). This ‘good guy’ approach now extends further, as this patch note reveals:
- Decoupling FSR 3 upscaling from frame generation.
- Allows FSR 3.1 frame generation technology to work with other upscaling solutions.
Up until now, you would need to use FSR if you also wanted to turn on frame generation to boost your FPS even higher. However, now frame generation will be a separate entity, opening up the possibility to use FSR 3.1 frame gen with DLSS. We see this being a big win for owners of GPUs such as the RTX 20-series or 30-series, who have had to resort to using FSR frame generation via modding. It is also highly relevant for AMD-sponsored games that don’t support DLSS.
What games support FSR 3?
FSR 3 is now being introduced to a wider pool of games. In a blog post on AMD’s website, they mentioned that FSR 3 is ‘now available and upcoming in 40 games’ – giving us a graphic for both categories.

This is plenty more support than what we got when it first launched in September 2023 – just two games back then: Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum. As for FSR 3.1, the first game to be getting support is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
