Cities: Skylines 2 has had a rocky start regarding performance, however, it’s being praised across the board for its gameplay elements. It seems the performance issues won’t last forever, as the first of hopefully many performance patches roll out. Cities Skylines 2 first performance patch hits Steam but not Game Pass just yet. We still recommend you check out our best settings guide for the game.
The differing patch release times possibly have something to do with the way Microsoft approves patches to games, the process may take longer on the Microsoft store and Game Pass than it does on Steam. With that being said, Game Pass players shouldn’t have too long to wait before the following patch for Cities: Skylines 2.
What was fixed in the first Cities: Skylines 2 patch?
On the 26th of October, developers of Cities: Skylines 2 posted an announcement regarding the first performance patch on the Paradox Forum. This update was hopefully the first of many, and thanks to this post, we know exactly what has been tweaked.
Cities: Skylines 2 patch notes
These are the official patch notes from the Paradox Interactive forum
This patch includes the following improvements and fixes:
- Changed LOD to be independent of rendering resolution to get more consistent performance with high resolutions
- Minor optimization with fog
- Depth of field optimizations and tweaks
- Global illumination tweaks
- Optimized stutters when buildings spawn/level up
- Optimized various stutters across all systems
- Fixed crash after upgrading wind turbine
- Fixed crash when car crashes into still hidden car with trailer
- Fixed crash with mesh loading (that happens with low settings mostly)
Interestingly enough, the patch has not yet hit the Game Pass version of the game, likely due to the extensive vetting process that Microsoft puts game patches and updates through. Or it could be that the different platform requires different optimizations. Whatever the reason, we expect the Game Pass patch to be live soon.
It’s great that the developers are already taking steps to improve the game this soon after the release, it shows a dedication to a player base that not a lot of companies have these days. Cities: Skylines 2 is expected to be a long-term work in progress, just like the last game, so we look forward to what they have in store for us in the coming months.
