It’s no secret that Cities: Skylines 2 has been released with massive performance issues, but we never expected the developer for the game, Paradox Interactive, to issue their own performance optimization guide – But at the end of the day, it shouldn’t be needed. Cities Skylines 2 runs so badly that they posted their own Optimization Guide.

Now you might see this as a bad thing, like Paradox admitting that their game is broken, and you might be right, but we think it’s a fantastic thing.

We at WePC have done some extensive research into these performance issues and written up our own Optimization Guide, check it out if you want to experience Cities: Skylines 2 as the game is meant to be played.

Cities: Skylines 2 runs so poorly that the devs made an optimization guide

The reason we think this optimization guide was a good idea, is not only because it allows Paradox to make the game playable for those who want to play it, but it also shows that they at least care about user experience. For example, Paradox could have just left the game to stew whilst they came up with a game-mending patch, but instead, they released a statement and an Optimization Guide.

An example of a game stewing in its issues would be Payday 3, which was promised its first patch on the 5th of October, and still hasn’t received it.

With that in mind, here is Paradox’s answer to the Cities: Skylines 2 performance issues. It is on the Steam forums, but it should work fine for the Game Pass version of the game. We also have our own optimization guide for Cities: Skylines 2, where we dive a little deeper into the issues.

The guide that Paradox published goes over a lot of the settings and tells you to disable them, the issue is that when a lit of these settings are completely disabled, the game looks 20 years old. Disabling these settings might be the only option for you, considering Cities: Skylines 2 melts my RTX 3090.

What can we do about the Cities: Skylines 2 performance issues?

All we can do is sit and wait for a new performance patch to be released for the game, it’s still very early doors as Cities: Skylines 2 only released on the 24th of October. I imagine the devs will be hard at work, grinding out a patch to solve these massive performance issues. I distinctly remember the first Cities: Skylines being hard to run, and it now works fine. The only gripe I have is that the game should have not released this unoptimized in the first place.

But I’m glad to see Paradox taking steps to resolve some of the issues we’re having with the game.
