XDefiant is the upcoming arena shooter from Ubisoft, and with the game entering a closed beta period this month, folks are wondering: is XDefiant free? And we’re here to tell you the answer; which is yes. Both at full release and in its beta stages, XDefiant is free and won’t cost you a dime to play – great news in a cost-of-living crunch that’s affecting hobbyists everywhere.

However, before the game’s full release, the answer is a little more complicated than that – just because there’s a hoop you need to jump through right now in order to the beta. Though you can head over to our full guide on how to get an XDefiant closed beta code for more information on that.

Is XDefiant free-to-play?

In principle, yes! XDefiant is being made and will release as a free-to-play first-person arena shooter game. That means, when it’s fully released, it’ll be absolutely free to play on all its platforms, and won’t cost you a penny to jump in and play.

The only complication right now is the closed beta. This in itself is free, but you do have to obtain a code to get into that close beta session. Again, the actual act of getting a closed beta won’t cost you anything, but because you’re not guaranteed to get one – despite Ubisoft’s apparent generosity with codes, it’s not quite the same as just downloading a free game and jumping right in.

What platforms is XDefiant on?

The superb news here – particularly in the context of it being a new game and XDefiant being free – is that XDefiant is on all the major platforms: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

If you’re after information on how the game actually feels to play then head on over to our XDefiant hands-on preview article.
