Call of Duty is the generation spanning, 19 year old, war based first person shooter. Owned by Activision Blizzard and developed by numerous studios, which themselves are now owned by Microsoft thanks to a $70 billion acquisition.

The Microsoft Monopoly

Now that Microsoft have acquired Activision Blizzard along with King, what does this mean for the flagship series? Well let’s take a look at Bethesda, another Company Microsoft acquired recently.

Their flagship series, the Elder Scrolls is confirmed to be an Xbox and PC exclusive, sorry Playstation and Nintendo fans, but you won’t be able to explore the world of Nirn again unless you move to PC.

The same fate could be coming to Call of Duty, both of these series have sold huge numbers and are loved by its fans.

It may not be too long before we get another announcement from Xbox head Phil Spencer telling everyone that the world’s most popular shooter is now a Xbox and PC exclusive.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

Of course this may not be the case, Microsoft already has a flagship shooter in Halo and cutting your audience in half by removing the current best selling console in the PS5 may not be the best business move.

Games like World of Warcraft have their player base mainly on PC so this acquisition won’t affect their player base. Call of Duty is mainly a multiplayer console game similar to Overwatch, and the current landscape of games as a service means the player base is everything, people constantly logging hours is necessary for the game to keep going.

The end of the 3rd party

Ultimately it’s still up in the air until Xbox makes a concrete statement. Will they take Call of Duty the way of Elder Scroll 6 and make it an exclusive or will it stay as it is now and remain available for all platforms until we get to Call of Duty 200: Soap McTavish in Space.
