Aside from the small matter of there not being enough server capacity, Amazon Studios’ New World MMOG has gotten off to a flying start. Since the European servers opened at 7am UK time, the game has amassed a player count of over half a million concurrent players. According to SteamDB, that puts New World in 22nd spot for the most played Steam games of all time, and in second place for the most popular game currently (after CS:GO).
New World: most players on Steam – current
Position | Title | Current players | All-time peak players |
1 | Counter-Strike: Global Offensive | 693,000 | 1,308.963 |
2 | New World | 510,000 | |
3 | Dota 2 | 491,000 | 1,295,114 |
That number may not seem all that impressive right now, but when you consider that the North American servers have only just come online – of which there is an estimated 50% capacity over Europe – we are looking at a concurrent player demand possibly in excess of one million.
If New World does hit a player count in excess of a million concurrent , it will become only the fifth game in Steam history to do so. Impressive for a day one release, especially so in spite of the ongoing server apocalypse.
New World: most played games on Steam – all-time

1 | PUBG: Battlegrounds | 302,000 | 3,257,248 |
2 | Counter-Strike: Global Offensive | 693,000 | 1,308,963 |
3 | Dota 2 | 491,000 | 1,295,114 |
4 | Cyberpunk 2077 | 8,000 | 1,054,388 |
22 | New World | 510,000 |
The success of New World has come after a difficult few years for Amazon Games. Recently it was forced to cancel it’s planned Lord of the Rings MMORPG, prior to which it released the much hyped Crucible to middling reviews. The hero shooter was returned to development just a month after launch, before it was shut down entirely.
With Amazon poised to release Lost Ark in the months ahead, things are clearly looking up for the internet retailer. Then again, after last year, things could hardly have gotten much worse.`No wonder Jeff Bezos has been so eager to leave the planet.
