UPDATE: Thanks to an extension on the Refer-a-Friend program, players can now keep playing with friends until March 15th, 2022. But, sadly, you must have already signed up before January.

If you’re anything like us in the WePC office, you’ll be constantly begging people to join you in a Fortnite match or two. Well, Epic Games’ new Refer a Friend program is finally open for registration, so you’ll have even more reason to hound your buddies into dropping into the popular Battle Royale. Even once you’ve got a friend to join you, though, it’s still not that easy to get your hands on Fortnite‘s exclusive Rainbow Racer bundle, so we’ll talk you through exactly what you need to do.

What is Fortnite’s Refer a Friend program?

In order to bring new players into Fortnite, or past players back, Epic Games are introducing Refer a Friend. This program will require people to bring new players to the colorful Battle Royale in order to gain exclusive rewards… but they’re not making it easy. Presumably, this is to ensure people don’t take advantage of the program, but you’d better hope your friends are genuinely keen to drop in with you on a regular basis.

Who is eligible to be a referee?

Someone can only be referred to the program if they have accrued 120 hours or less of playtime in any Battle Royale mode in the last 30 days. Therefore, this can be someone completely new to Fortnite BR, or just someone who has lost interest and hasn’t played in a while.

How do you Refer a Friend?

Registration is now live for Refer a Friend, and you can sign up by heading to the official registration site. You will already need to be Epic friends with your referee, so if you’re bringing a brand-new player in, be sure to add them on Fortnite first. Once you are friends, you, as the referrer, will need to log in to your Epic account on the Refer a Friend site. Next, select up to five eligible friends to team up with, and the easy part is done. The referee will not need to register on the Refer a Friend page.

What are the rewards for referring a friend?

On completion of different challenges, you’ll be able to collect items from the Rainbow Racer collection. Seemingly inspired by motor racing trophies (though only silver… apparently we’re not good enough for gold), Rainbow Racer is a must-have for any motorsport enthusiast. Based on the Headhunter model, the outfit features the original Recruit wearing a metallic, pink, yellow and cyan suit with black racing gloves. And if you don’t manage to get the Rainbow Racer outfit due to its time-consuming challenge requirement, there are other complimentary items that are easier to obtain.

Gridlock Loading Screen

As soon as you register with a friend, you will both automatically be rewarded with the Gridlock loading screen, just for “making a connection.”

Miridescent Wrap and Flair Fare Glider

Keeping in with the style of Rainbow Racer’s metallic clothing, you can then earn yourself a matching Wrap and Glider. Both feature the reflective silver coloring of her outfit, with pink, yellow and cyan trim and checkered flag detail. The Wrap is easily claimed by just playing one game with your referee, and the Glider isn’t much harder either. Collect the Flair Fare Glider by placing top 10 with your referee a total of three times in Duos, Trios or Squads.

Drive Shaft Pickaxe

The bundle is then completed by the silver Drive Shaft Pickaxe which really hones in on the racing trophy design with a winged steering wheel as its head. This can be claimed by eliminating ten opponents with your referee in Duos, Trios or Squads.

So how do you earn Fortnite’s Rainbow Racer?

The Rainbow Racer Outfit is understandably the most difficult to claim, but the challenge has still been blasted by players as being too difficult. To earn the skin, both you and your referee need to level up 60 times before the end of the Refer a Friend time period. These are Account levels as opposed to Battle Pass levels, and can be viewed in the Career tab in game. Your account level increases across Seasons, though, so you can continue with your progress after Season 8 ends around December 5th, 2021.

When does Refer a Friend end?

You’ll need to register for Refer a Friend by November 14, 2021 at 11:59pm EST. Then you must complete all challenges by January 10th, 2022 March 15th, 2022, in order to obtain the Rainbow Racer Outfit in Fortnite. Whether or not Epic Games will continue the Refer a Friend program past this date with new rewards remains to be seen, but of course you’ll need to call on even more friends if they do!

If you or your referee are looking to level up your Fortnite account on PC, take a look at our System Requirements page to make sure it will be able to handle it!
