In a recent security update to its software, Nvidia has listed out the security vulnerabilities in the GeForce software. This means you really should update GeForce Experience now.
This affects all versions prior to 3.27.0.112, so check which one you’re on and be sure to update it if not. As if you don’t you are in danger of possible code execution, information disclosure, data tampering, and denial of service.
What security issues does GeForce Experience have?
On the highest level on the CVSS and CWE scores, the vulnerability is with the installer. Where, if installing GeForce Experience, it may delete data from a linked location.
So if you run the installer from a compromised directory a malicious hacker can delete files. Making it seem like you may have accidentally deleted a file but in fact, it’s someone else doing it for you. Data tampering is only via the installer and no explicit control over the vulnerability is available.
Another threat is an uncontrolled search path in all installers. Here the attacker with user-level privilege may load any DLL when it is launched. Leading to an escalation of privileges and code execution.
As for the last listed vulnerability, there is one in the NVContainer component. Where an admin user can create a symbolic link to a file requiring higher privileges to write or modify. Potentially leading to a denial of service, escalation of privilege, or limited data tampering.
Which can cause you to lose access to your own system and with little power. So you want to make sure to update GeForce Experience to rid of these vulnerabilities.
How do you update GeForce Experience?
To update GeForce Experience, you first want to open it. Right-click the icon in the tray and click on experience. This will open the application if you have it installed and open.
The app should update automatically when you open it. If not you may have to download a new version and install it from the Nvidia website. And while you’re there, be sure to update your graphics drivers.
