Last year’s Vivo X Fold was well-received, and this year, the company is taking it up a notch with the second generation of the foldable device, Vivo X Fold 2. According to rumors, the company is putting the final touches on the new phone, and here’s what we know (or think we know) about it.

Vivo X Fold 2 release date & global release date prediction

Vivo executive Huang Tao posted on Weibo, revealing the X Fold 2 is the official phone of the 2023 Boao Forum for Asia. This event started on 28th March and ended on the 31st.

Although the company only officially revealed the phone’s name prior to that, Tao further revealed a tease: “see you in April for more surprises!”. So, we expected the launch to happen in April 2023. This would be in-keeping with the company’s trend of previous releases: the Vivo X Fold was launched in April 2022. However, last year’s X Fold was a China-exclusive device, and we hope this year, Vivo will launch the X Fold 2 globally.

Now that the Vivo X Fold 2 released in China on April 20th, maybe you could be looking forward a worldwide release. From what we know right now, there aren’t any plans for a global release of the X Fold 2. Importing may be an option, but this doesn’t come without a cost. There are other foldable phones on the horizon though, such as the Motorola Razr.

An apparently reliable Chinese tech reporter has claimed at Digital Chat Station that Vivo will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for the upcoming foldable device. In parallel to this, 91Mobiles has reported that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be accompanied by 12 GB RAM and 256 GB of storage. It is the same as last year’s X Fold, so we expect to see a 12GB/512GB variant. These reports coincide with a phone on benchmark AnTuTu with a model number PD2266.

Digital Chat Station has also reported that the X Fold 2 will receive an upgraded 2K panel with an upgraded 4,800 mAh battery and a faster 120W charging speed. Nothing is known about the camera of the upcoming Vivo foldable device, and a few unreliable rumors are flying around. Still, we will update our page as soon as we receive anything concrete.

Up until the launch, we didn’t really have any official confirmation regarding the price of the Vivo X Fold 2. However, now it’s released, we can see that it follows the same pricing from it’s predecessor, which we expected would be the case.

• 12GB RAM + 512GB storage: ¥9,999 (approx. $1,550/£1,200/€1,450)

Vivo X Fold 2 features

We already heard about some of the new specs rumored to be included in the Vivo X Fold 2 ahead of the launch. Now that it’s confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor is included, this marks the first time it’s featured in a foldable smartphone. It makes sense for the Vivo X Fold 2 to move on to this new processor, as the original used the Gen 1 CPU.

There are some other familiar features hardware-wise which include the dual screen fingerprint sensor, compass, barometer, and gyro controls. Software-wise though, the phone runs on Android, which is important to note with Android 14 on it’s way. The aforementioned PD2266 model benchmark was running on Android 13 and will almost certainly be compatible with the newest Android release.

Is Vivo X Fold 2 a good phone?

The first Vivo X Fold was a China-exclusive foldable smartphone released last year. It looks like the Fold 2 is following suit in that regard, which will make it harder to obtain outside of the region. The phone was well-received in terms of design, featuring much of the design which made the original a hit too.

It’s a high-end smartphone which is the first foldable to adopt the latest top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. This makes it the most powerful foldable upon it’s release. There has also been plenty of praise for the camera and functionality – both folded and unfolded.
