r/place is back in 2024 for a third round and we’re excited to see what the various communities of Reddit will band together and create!

So far it’s mainly been dominated by a few trends: ‘FUCKSPEZ’ (being bile directed at Reddit CEO Steve Huffman aka u/spez for recent decisions on the platform), and also by the Germans and the Turks in painting massive flags and various kebab-related memery. Since then though things have varied quite a bit into a more broad canvas.

Dive in and take a look yourself!

What is r/place?

  • r/place was created by Josh Wardle, the man who brought you the phenomenon that is Wordle.
  • The subreddit begins with a blank 1000 x 1000 canvas of white pixels.
  • Once the event begins, anyone with a Reddit account can change a single pixel to one of a range of colors.
  • Each user is limited to changing the color of one pixel every 5 minutes.

Such a seemingly innocuous premise can lead to many amusing events, including streamer drama and myriad other unexpected eventualities. It’s ultimately supposed to be an experiment to see how online communities will (or can) act in working towards a common goal.

Both previous events proved to be very popular, and it will be interesting to see if the event has legs the third time round.

r/place FAQs

What is the pixel thing on Reddit?

The pixel thing on Reddit is called r/place. Essentially it’s a collaborative experiment involving a blank canvas on which each Reddit user can paint one pixel at a time. Will hilarity/depravity ensue?

How do I enter an R place?

To place a pixel in r/place, simply navigate to the subreddit whilst logged into your Reddit account.

Once there you should see a stylized P icon to the right of the search bar at the top of your screen. Simply click it then click the pixel you want to paint from the canvas, choose your color, and you’re done!
