Steam is currently the most recognizable PC gaming platform in the world, it’s probably the most popular too! Steam is available on almost every mainstream operating system including, of course, Windows. However, Steam’s life on Windows 7 is coming to a swift end. So Windows 7 users, say goodbye to Steam.
January 2024 marks the end of Steam Support for Windows 7
As of January 1st, 2024, Steam will no longer be supported on Windows 7. Marking the end of an era.
I’m only 24, but I got onto Steam around 11 years ago, on Windows 7 of course, and I can’t help but feel like it’s the end of something big. There have been posts on Reddit with users asking if there’s a way to circumvent the ceasing of support for Windows 7.
All nostalgia aside, if you’re still on Windows 7, you need to do something about that. The amount of security vulnerabilities you’re opening yourself up to by being on an outdated and unsupported OS is astounding.
Microsoft stopped the extended support for Windows 7 back in 2020. Meaning some of you have been running an unprotected system for almost 4 years. We strongly recommend an upgrade.
Whilst it’s sad to see Steam leaving a platform of very few (The Steam Hardware Survey says there’s only 0.08% of you), Steam is still thriving, enjoying a 33 million user peak back in March. Steam certainly isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Steam is still and will continue to be supported on Windows 10 and 11.
Is there a way to circumvent the end of Steam support on Windows 7?
In all likelihood, there’s no real way to get around the end of support for Windows 7, Valve posted on an official channel stating
“As of January 1st, 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.“
You will not be able to load the Steam Client in Windows 7, let alone be able to find a workaround. There’s no way to get around this change other than to update to a new version of Windows.
