It appeared every brand was showing off hidden connectors at Computex 2023 and it looks as though ASUS is following up its designs with mass production. In particular, the RTX 4070 GPU without a cable connector is going to start being made in the fall of this year along with a white model alternative being available for the still nameless card.
As WCCFtech reports, the announcement comes during the Billibili World 2023 exhibition in Shanghai China. That timeline would likely put the launch date at the end of this year or the start of 2024. The GPU will also require a specific motherboard to work, one that has an extra connector slot. Both of these components will increase the cost of your build since ASUS stated to EIXA that the complex manufacturing does cost extra over standard parts.
How ASUS is hiding the cables
As ASUS showed off at Computex plenty of its components were aiming to give that sleek and cable free build aesthetic. The motherboard achieves this by moving all the cable connectors to the back. This allows the bulky power cables and smaller IO connectors to be hidden at the back. There you can hide them away, or cable manage them better.
Although the motherboard has the majority of connections, you’d still be left with one unsightly cable around the front. The graphics card still requires its cable, be it the 12VHPWR straight from the PSU or an adapted option that is even more of an eyesore. That’s where ASUS has the wireless GPU to go with the motherboard.
The card has a secondary connector behind the PCIe lanes, allowing it to grab power from the motherboard instead of a separate connector. This PCB slot feeds up to 600W directly to the GPU from a 16-pin connector on the back of the motherboard. This could also help the worry of burning up connectors, although the standard is already getting upgraded to help prevent any destruction.
Overall, it is an interesting concept. Although likely a niche market for those who really want to have a clean build and are willing to pay the premium for it. While the rest of us will enjoy the build pics instead.
