Can you play ranked matches if you’re unranked in CS2?

Yes, unranked players can play ranked matches in CS2. However, by playing ranked matches, you will be playing placement matches to determine your rank in the game. After 10 placement matches, you will be given an ELO number and rank. This is true for any mode where you receive a rank, including:

• Premier Mode
• Competitive
• Wingman

There is no way to play ranked matches in CS2 and have them not affect rank. Even in unranked matches, what players you get paired up with in matchmaking is dependent on your skill level in the rating system.

However, you are able to play the unranked game modes like Casual which are like a scrimmage. You won’t need to keep tabs on your rank when playing Casual and will remain unranked if you don’t play the modes with a rating system.

Pretty much all Counter-Strike matches have an air of competition to them since you are playing against other players on teams. But, if you want to take a break from the hardcore players and having to worry about your skill group, unranked matchmaking is your best bet. While it’s still skill-based matchmaking, Valve intentionally leaves it unranked. This way, you don’t have to focus on ranks and match history.
