With Diablo IV from Blizzard finally kicking off the seasonal events, players are ready to dive right back into the open world of Sanctuary and get a head start on all the new content.

With the first season release date this July, newcomers and veterans are going to have plenty of questions. How many seasons will there be? What happens when the season is over?

If you need to know what happens to seasonal characters and progression when a season ends in Diablo IV, we’ve got you covered.

What happens to season 1 characters when the season ends in Diablo 4?

Any new character you create during a Diablo IV season will transfer over to the Eternal Realm when the season concludes. They stop being a seasonal character and become a normal character, similar to how you would create a character in normal gameplay.

If you’ve played Diablo III seasons, it is the same system, so you’ll likely be ready for when season 1 starts.

What happens to progression when a season ends in Diablo 4?

Very similar to new seasonal characters being transferred to the Eternal Realm, any of the progression outside the seasonal storyline will also be ported to the Eternal Realm. This includes:

  • Map progress
  • Main Campaign progress
  • Renown progress
  • Altars of Lilith
  • Priority quests
  • Transmogs

Because the seasonal content will end, that progress will not carry over as the seasonal mechanics will be gone. But, as you can see, all other progress you made with your seasonal character will carry over to the Eternal Realm with them, from Gems, jewelry, and armor sets found to dungeons completed.

Any cosmetics and rewards earned from the battle pass, either free tier or Premium tier for the battle pass will carry over, as well.

However, progression made through the seasonal journey and battle pass will be lost. This is because new seasonal content will take its place when the new season launches. The first season of Diablo IV content from Season of the Malignant, such as Malignant Hearts, Malignant Monsters, and Malignant Tunnels, will be removed from the game when the season ends, so any progress made through there will be gone.

That means you have to have as much fun as you can with the new features and questlines before the season ends and the latest patch is dropped. The former priest, Cormond, will stick around but the content he gave you, like the new threat of the Malignant and new bosses, even the side quests will not be available anymore.
