Blizzard Entertainment has announced it is bringing back the Darkening of Tristram event for Diablo 3 on December 31. Cultists will start appearing on New Year’s Eve at 4 PM PST, with the event actually beginning on January 4, lasting until January 31.

What is the Darkening of Tristram event?

The Darkening of Tristram is Diablo 3’s first major event of 2022. The event is a harrow back to the old days of the Diablo franchise. Cultists come back to Tristram, causing all sorts of problems in Sanctuary. Players will begin to hunt down Cultists around Sanctuary and Tristram in the Adventure Mode, eventually providing story snippets and clues to the region’s past.

While the event lasts, you’ll be able to go into the Cathedral, only this time in what Blizzard call the RetroVision. Blizzard explains you should expect to find familiar enemies, but that implies there’s something different about them. When you delve into the mystery, you should expect to find new loot and rewards for taking part in the event. In previous years, players earned banners, item transmogs, pets of the Butcher and the famous Diablo cows and more. As it stands, it appears that there are some repeat rewards, but that may only be a snippet of the rewards, with even more secrets waiting to be earned and unlocked.

Players who started with a fresh level one character took and completed previous events received a pet reward for their troubles. It is unclear if this will be the same for the 2022 event at the time of writing.

How to start the Darkening of Tristram event?

Anyone interested in participating in the Diablo 3 2022 Darkening of Tristram event can start it during Act 1 of the Adventure Mode. Head over to the Old Ruins Waypoint, and you can find the demonic pentagram on the map, making the starting point for the Darkening of Tristram 2022 event.
