The Final Fantasy franchise has seen a few prequels and sequels in its long history. However, the latest installment of Final Fantasy will feature a few reoccurring themes that may lead you to believe it is a continuation or prequel.

You can see reoccurring themes in the various installments, such as the summons and chocobos. Final Fantasy 16 will be released on PlayStation on June 22, 2023. But first, find out here if Final Fantasy 16 is a prequel or sequel in this guide.

Will Final Fantasy 16 be a Prequel or Sequel?

Final Fantasy 16 is not a Prequel or a direct Sequel. It is a new game to the Square Enix Final Fantasy franchise. As a result, fans can expect a new Hero and characters. Based on various trailers, such as the State of Play and gameplay, fans of the franchise will be introduced to a new storyline. According to the official Final Fantasy Twitter account, it was also stated that you would not need to play the previous Final Fantasy games, emphasizing the beginning of a new story.

Final Fantasy XVI’s latest installment will feature a tale of tragedy and revenge. We will follow the protagonist Clive Rosfield, the First Shield of Rosaria, on his quest for revenge. His story began when his younger brother Joshua Rosfield lost his life at the hands of a mysterious dark Eikon called Ifrit. Clive, who has sworn to protect Joshua, will then declare exact revenge on the Eikon who caused this tragedy.

During his journey, he encounters forgotten companions, such as Jill Warrick and his side pup, now-turned-hound Torgal. They will meet and engage in combat with various Dominions, Dominants, and their Eikons. In the active battle, you can also use accessories to help you if the fights are too complicated.
