Final Fantasy 16 has a big focus on combat, allowing you to harness various Eikon abilities and magic so Clive can take down his foes. Throughout the game, you will gather more abilities from Eikons like Garuda, Phoenix, Titan, and Shiva, giving you more options during combat.

There are many different types of foes that you will come across in the game, each with different weaknesses. Some enemies will even block your attacks, requiring you to think outside the box.

When an enemy starts guarding against your attacks, nearby enemies will use this as a chance to counter your moves. Bring out your best abilities and work to stagger them before you get dealt massive damage. Here is how you break an enemy’s guard in Final Fantasy 16.

How to perform a guard break in Final Fantasy 16

After progressing through Final Fantasy 16, you will find enemies that guard against your attacks. To break an enemy’s guard, you will need to use an ability that breaks guard or go around them. Luckily, there are multiple abilities that can break a foe’s guard. If none are active, use Phoenix Shift to quickly break their guard. You can also break their guard by simply getting around them and hitting their back.

The following abilities are great for breaking an enemy’s guard:

  • Burning Blade
  • Deadly Embrace
  • Windup
  • Flames of Rebirth
  • Rook’s Gambit
  • Aerial Blast
  • Tornado
  • Lightning Rod
  • Cold Snap
  • Flare Breath
  • Blind Justice
  • Judgment Bolt

Even charged magic can break an enemy’s guard if they are weak to the magic type. Some abilities like Dead Embrace will use a grappling claw to pull an enemy to you, breaking their guard in the process while other attacks like Windup allow you to break an enemy’s guard with a punch.

Take advantage of all of your abilities when dealing with guarding foes. Keep on your toes as well to perform a precision dodge should they decide to attack. You can use the opportunity to counterattack if time correctly.
