Many OG Fortnite players have great memories of their early days playing the video game. Epic Games released its battle royale game in September 2017 but it took a few months to take off. Once it did, it’s never looked back and has become one of the most popular video games of all time.

One thing that has made Fortnite so popular is its constant development. Epic has released hundreds of updates for it, which is what made the game feel fresh. However, a lot of players would still love to go back to the OG Fortnite, even though the game looked different back then.

OG Fortnite was different and unique

Fortnite became a global phenomenon in 2018. Almost everyone has heard about it, and the video game was at its peak at the time. Thanks to frequent updates and fun new items, Epic Games has managed to get millions of players on a daily basis, making the game not only popular but also profitable.

The game, however, looked very different in its early seasons, and here are some of the things only OG players remember.

1) Overpowered weapons

OG Fortnite had many overpowered weapons. Epic Games made several weapon balance changes in the early days of the video game, but some weapons were still too good. Assault rifles were nearly unstoppable when the game just came out, in both regular and scoped variants.

The SCAR, one of the iconic Fortnite weapons, used to deal 98 headshot damage. This means that it was possible to take enemies down with just two to three shots. Furthermore, small shield potions were not available in the early days of Fortnite, which is why many players had no quick heals at their disposal.

2) No automatic material switching

Building is what separated Fortnite from other battle royale games. This is a mechanic that drastically increases the skill gap in the video game, and it’s always been very important. Due to this, it’s no surprise that Epic Games has adjusted it several times throughout the course of the game.

In OG Fortnite, players had to manually switch their materials when they run out of them. Not paying attention to remaining materials usually resulted in a quick death to fall damage. This process has been automatic for a few years, but many veteran players remember paying attention to the count of every material and making sure to switch it before it runs out.

3) Double Pump

The Double Pump technique was one of the most powerful features Fortnite has ever had. These days, shotguns have a switching delay, but that was not the case in OG Fortnite. Instead of having a brief cooldown when switching to the Pump Shotgun, players could fire it right away. This was called the Double Pump, and many players used the trick to take down groups of enemies.

Some players carried three or more Pump Shotguns in their inventory, which may sound insane in 2024. Contrary to popular belief, Epic Games did not nerf this technique immediately. Instead, the Double Pump was in the game for a few months before the game developer added a switching delay.

4) Bloom and inaccurate weapons

Fortnite OG weapons were very powerful and even the gray Pump Shotgun was good enough to one-shot enemies. However, many weapons were affected by awful bloom, which is something that annoyed many players. The bloom was so bad that it was possible to miss the target with an entire magazine while having the crosshair on it.

Epic Games performed a couple of shooting tests early in the game and countered this issue by adding the first-shot accuracy. Not only are weapons much more accurate now, but players no longer have to rely on luck to hit their shots.

5) Shopping cart boost

Fortnite players are well-known for their creativity. Ever since they discovered rocket riding in the early days of the video game, they’ve come up with many other tricks to use new items. The shopping cart was the first-ever vehicle added to Fortnite Battle Royale, and it didn’t take long for players to figure out an innovative way to use it.

When combined with the Minigun, shopping was very fast, which is why players used it to move quickly around the map. Considering that shopping carts have no engine, moving uphill was impossible unless they were pushed by another player. Fortunately, the Minigun turned these carts into amazing vehicles.

6) Vending Machines

Epic Games added Vending Machines to Fortnite in Chapter 1 – Season 3. However, these machines looked different back then. Each machine had a rarity and offered three items for materials. For example, a Legendary Vending Machine had three gold weapons, and each of them cost 500 wood, stone, or metal.

At the time, materials were capped at 999, which is why many players considered this price to be very high. Eventually, Epic changed Vending Machines, making weapons free, before turning them into Weapon-O-Matics.

7) Fragile chests

Chests are arguably the most important item in Fortnite Battle Royale. They can be found all over the island and contain valuable loot. While they haven’t gone through many changes in the past, there is an important quality-of-life change that Epic Games releases in Chapter 1.

During the first few seasons of Fortnite, chests were very fragile. Once destroyed, chests wouldn’t give out any loot, which is what made looting much slower. This change has improved the looting process, and many players are grateful for it. Destroying chests on accident in the early stages of the match was almost always tragic, especially in crowded landing zones.
